Royal Highness Bernice Margaretta Jeanise-Quarles, 87, was born on February 10, 1932 in Honolulu, Hawaii to the union of Theophile Jeanise, Sr. and Mary Guillory. She was one of eight children born to this union. Her parents, siblings, former husband, Jewel Douglas all preceded her in death.
Bernice migrated with her family to the State of Louisiana and later moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she made her home over sixty years. She was a graduate of the performing arts school in New York City Manhatten District in the early 1940's. As a youth she also worked in the garment district.
Bernice attended the school of dance where she was able to model for some prestigious companies in New York City. She united in marriage at a young age abd worked on the Air Force base in Salt Lake City, Utah along with her husband, Jewel Douglas, Jr., as a carrier during World War II. Mr. Douglas was first cousin to Alvin Ailey.
Bernice worked in the hangers repairing airplanes for government when her then husband departed to serve in Okinawa. While in Kansas City she cared for her former mother-in-law, Esther Lee Johnson while her husband worked for the Rock Island Railroad.
Bernice later united in marriage to Percy C. Quarles. The two of them worked together at General Hospital in the dining hall, where they are their meals together daily. She was a very generous and caring person was always trying to help others feeding children and families.
Bernice was a devout Roman Catholic and was a member of the Our Lady of Sorrow Church overforty years. She was the daughter of several Chiefs and the great-great granddaughter of Chief Henry Memberton who was born in 1510. He died in Nova Scotia in 1611, where a statue and stamp was created in his honor. Her great-great grandmother Marie Moletor was the daughter of a Chief also. She had a long lineage with the Indian tribe and had the distinct honor of being a part of the Choctaw Eagle Tribe and the Cherokee Irish and Royal Hawiian Tribes on her mother's side of the family. She was the distant cousin to the last Princess of Hawaii to King Kameha meha. They established the family symbol of the Irish Dragon, including the flags of France, Spain and Ireland.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Percy C. Quarles; a daughter, Delmira Quarles, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins other relatives and friends from all parts of the world.
Funeral services Thursday, March 19, at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Sorrow Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation 9am-10am at the church. Service conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
