Betty Lou
Hoggatt
Apr 12, 1933 — Aug 27, 2025
Betty Lou Hoggatt was born on April 21, 1933, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, to Sylvester Brown Sr. and Lou Anna Mayberry. She grew up with a strong sense of family, faith, and education—values that would carry her throughout her life.
Betty attended Douglas School, where she graduated with pride before continuing her studies at Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma. There, she earned her bachelor's degree, laying the foundation for a lifelong career in education.
She later married Alvin Clinton Hoggatt, and to their union they raised one beloved son, Arlan. Together, they built a life weathering good and bad times.
Betty dedicated over 30 years of her life to the Kansas City, Missouri School District, where she served as a teacher. She touched countless lives, shaping young minds with dedication, wisdom, and care before retiring in 1991. Beyond the classroom, Betty was a faithful member of Independent Baptist Church of Leavenworth, where her faith and service to God were evident.
She had a vibrant spirit and many creative passions. Betty found joy in crocheting, painting, making jewelry, and expressing her personal style with elegance. She loved to dress up, and she had a special affection for a beautiful hat. More than anything, Betty loved being surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Will Marie Cain, her husband Alvin Hoggatt, and her son Clinton Hoggatt.
Betty leaves to cherish her memory her devoted son, Arlan Hoggatt (Shernita) of Kansas City, Mo; her brother, Sylvester Brown Jr. of Texas; her beloved grandchildren, Dacoda and Camrin Hoggatt; and a host of relatives and friends whose lives were enriched by her love, laughter, and wisdom.
Her presence will be dearly missed, but her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
