Betty Jean
Smalls
Aug 5, 1960 — Nov 29, 2022
Betty Jean Mayfield Smalls was born August 5, 1960 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Luvenia and TJ Mayfield. She was the eighth of twelve children. Betty transitioned this life on November 27, 2022 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
Betty grew up in Chicago and graduated from Orr High School. During her early years she accepted Christ at a young age under the leadership of Bishop Johnnie M. Bailey. This is where she began her singing career with the Heavenly Host Choir, along with her siblings. They would sing at different churches in Chicago. Also, this is where the group The Mayfield Singers originated.
Betty relocated to Kansas City, Missouri in 1980 with her mother. She attended School and was certified as a CNA. Betty was employed by Operation Breakthrough before she retired.
She married Marvin Smalls in in 2008. They later adopted two beautiful daughters, Jayleona Mayfield Smalls and Julieona Mayfield Smalls.
She became a member of Christian Tabernacle Church of God in Christ under the leadership of The late Bishop Emanuel Newton. She later became a member of Faith Tabernacle Deliverance Ministries where Apostle Marvin Mayfield is the pastor. Betty was very active in the church. She was an ordained Missionary, she served as Director of the choir, Sunday School teacher, Advisor to the youth and would always fill in when needed as Praise team leader. She continued her singing career with different groups: The Spiritual Nightingales, Sisters In Christ and others. One of her greatest joys was attending Quartet singing programs, especially if the Mayfield singers were performing.
She was a great soul winner for Christ. Betty loved helping and sharing with the less fortunate, even giving people a place to stay.
Betty is preceded in death by her mother and father, Luvenia and TJ Mayfield, a sister, Gloria Clark and brothers, TJ and Timothy Mayfield Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memories, husband, Marvin Smalls, daughters, Jayleona and Julieona Smalls; her sisters, Annie Hankins, Lula Martin, Hester (Gerald) Major of Kansas City, Mo., Patricia (Frank)Atkins, Sabrina Mayfield of Chicago, Ill., Mary (Terry) King, Jacksonville, Florida; brothers, Apostle Marvin (Patricia) Mayfield and William Mayfield of Kansas City, Mo. A host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends and certainly her church family.
We have lost a great woman of God. Her physical presence is gone. But memories will forever be in our hearts.
