Obituary

Carl Ellsworth Jackson, Jr., 73, KCMO, passed away on August 25, 2016. He was born November 7, 1942 to the union of Carl E. Jackson, Sr. and Blanche Hornbuckle in Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by both parents and his elder peers, Bobby Maples, Phyllis Johnson, and Veoma Gaynell Vaughns; and a nephew, Craig Johnson. Carl was educated in the Kansas City, Missouri public schools, attending Carver, R.T. Cole and Manual. Carl enlisted in the United States Army in 1961 and later received an honorable discharge in 1962. Carl worked various jobs including Rugo Plastic as a delivery driver and U.S. Toys. He also worked for House of Lloyd as a warehouse worker, from which he later retired. Carl was the drill major of the Exotic Drill Team. His nickname was 'Cheese Stick'; he always had a bag of cheese sticks. He was very talented and loved participating in talent shows. Carl had a passion for singing and not only could he sing, but he could 'sang'. He was the life of the party and would always cut up a mean rug. Carl had been putting groups together back in the day and was known for promoting groups all the time. He was very particular about rehearsal and being on time. He wanted everything to be perfect. Carl later became leader of a singing group called, 'the V.I.P.'s', who later reunited in 2008 and were called, 'SMOKE'. They had been singing together about fifty years. He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, Carl Johnson and Rodney Johnson; a daughter, LaDonna DeBoe; fifteen grandchildren, Markeisha Deboe-Clark, Tanisha DeBoe, Rakeisha Hattley, Ranisha Hattley, La'Quan Hattley, Rateisha Hattley, D'Marion DeBoe-Robinson, Rodteshia Johnson, Rodney Johnson, Carl Smith, Tayaba Jones, Antonio Nash, Tyron Williams, Christian Kimbrough and Dishae Johnson; seven great grandchildren, Markeya DeBoe, Mar'Quan Deboe, Martoine Deboe-Clark, Tyroe Hargrove, Ricky Monroe, Tyron Johnson and Rae'Lynn Hattley; a brother, Kenneth Maples (Marilyn); a sister, Bettye Davis; best friend, Chappell Smith and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Thursday, September 15, 12:00 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
