Obituary

Charles Edward Smith, 76, of Kansas City, Missouri died on Tuesday, May 19, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born on April 28, 1944 to the union of Wilson A. Smith, Sr. and Roberta Irvin Smith in Kansas City, Missouri. He was called from labor to rest a day after he and his late wife's 57th anniversary. He was preceded in bt his parents, his wife, Patricia Smith, son, Charles Reginald Smith, grandson, Earl Dunn, Sr., five brothers, Wilson A. Smith, Jr., Willie Smith, Lonnie Smith Bennie Smith and Melvin Smith and one sister, Lottie Smith. Charles attended Attucks Elementary School and Lincoln Jr. High School. He was determined to continue his education and later obtained his G.E.D. He began working at tender young age of 12 at Toby's Grocery Store. He also worked at the Kansas City Water Department and later with General Motors Fairfax Plant where he retired in 2003 after 25 years of service. Charles married the love of his life Patricia "Pat" Eleen Smith who was his childhood sweetheart. They married on May 18, 1963 and to this union was born two daughters, Michelle Smith and Deidre Smith; four sons, Charles Reginald Smith, Brenton Smith, Keith Smith and Charles Howell-Smith, Charles was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church. He loved his church and particiapted in many misistries in which he held a variety of positions, Men's Choir member, Methodist Men and Trustee. Charles was often a committee of one, doing things he felt needed to be done such as laying carpet in the sanctuary, planting flowers and anything else he knew the church needed. Charles loved spending time with his family especially his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved sitting on his front porch listening to music and drinking Tito's. He never met a stranger. He nurtured relationships with many people he came to know, friends became a part of the family and many called him Grandpa or Pops. He leaves to cherish his memory, his daughters, Michelle Smith and Deidre Smith; sons, Brenton Smith, Keith Smith, Charles Howell-Smith; sisters, Geraldine Baker (William), Betty Boykin, Barbara Smith, Mary L. Jones, Leslie Howard, Faye Whitcomb (Oscar), Ruby Hammock (Herb); brothers, Leonard Smith and Calvin Smith (Deborah), fourteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a host nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; special daughter, Robin Brown; special sons, Walter Ramsey and George Ramsey. Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 30, at 11:00 am at the Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors Chapel. Private disposition. Services were conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors.
