Obituary

Charles Herbert Keys, 78, passed away on August 27, 2017 at North Care Hospice House. He was born July 11, 1939 in Tutwiler, Mississippi to the late John Walter and Eliza Jane (Wheeler) Keys. In 1958, Charles graduated from West District High School in Sumner, Mississippi, where he was a member of the basketball team. In 1962, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee and became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He later earned a Master of Science degree from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri. Charles met his wife Ione Carolyn Lane while teaching Physical Education and Industrial Arts, and coaching basketball at South Fulton High School East in South Fulton, Tennessee. In 1962, they married and moved to Hayti, Missouri where their son, the late Anheuser Scott Keys was born. They then moved to Kansas City in 1968 where Charles began his career at Bendix Corp, (now Honeywell Corp). He worked as a Detail Draftsman and Industrial Engineer until retiring in 1994. Some of his favorite pastimes included fishing, hunting and watching sports. Charles accepted Christ as a child in Mississippi. In 1961, he joined St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was a loyal member. Charles was preceded in death by his son, Anheuser, on Aug. 10, 2016. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 54 years, Ione Carolyn Keys and two grandchildren, Torry Nicole Keys and Samuel Charles Keys of Atlanta, GA. He is survived other relatives including Edward Wheeler of Finley Park, IL; Renee' Henderson Hampton of Kentwood, MI; Harrold Jerome (Sharonese) Henderson of Antioch, TN; Maurice (Vicki) Thomas of Bolingbrook, IL; Craig Franklin (Joyce) Weeks of Birmingham, AL and Eric Benard Weeks of Marks, MS. He also leaves two grand-nieces, a grand-nephew, many coworkers and friends. Funeral services Tuesday, September 5, 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church. Private disposition. Visitation 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
