Clarence E. Leigh, Sr., 69, KCMO, passed away on October 7, 2017 at Research Medical Center. Also known as C.E. and "Soul Doc", he was born on November 19, 1947 to the union of Edmond Jr. and Marion Leigh in Newnan, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and youngest brother James Wesley Leigh. Clarence accepted Christ at an early age at Gregg Tabernacle. A.M.E. He later joined and was a faithful member of the Cain-Grant A.M.E. Church for many years where he served as President of the Usher Board, Choir President, Lay President, member of the Steward Board, Sons of Allen and Trustee. C.E. attended schools in the Kansas City, Missouri School District and was a graduate of Manual High School's Class of 1965, of which he later served as an officer and member of the Alumni Board. He attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO before being drafted into the United States Army where he was assigned to duty in Korea during the Vietnam War. He received an honorable discharge on February 1, 1974. When he returned to the States, he began working the Kansas City, Missouri Public Works Department in the Engineering Division as an Engineering Aide I, II, and III from 1970 to 1981, where he also became the first African American supervisor in the Public Works Water Department. He left the City and worked one year for Parker-Tyson Construction. In 1982 he began working the Kansas City, Missouri Water Services Department in several capacities including Surveying, Engineering Technician, Senior Engineering Technician and Principal Engineering Technician. During this time C.E. became one of the first African American Inspectors for the Water Services Engineering Division. He retired in February 2013 after 47 years of service, during which he was able to enjoy bowling as a pastime. He leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted wife of 18 years, Janet and with this union emerged a beautiful blended family of 10 children, five biological and five by love: Clarence Eugene Leigh, Jr. (Vychell) of Kansas City, MO; Rachelle Payne (Derrell) of Norcross, GA; Marvell Howlett (Tina) of Kansas City, MO; Desiree Clark (Bennie) of St. Cloud, MN; Daysha Lewis (Jerome) of Clarksville, TN; Anthony Woods, Leya Woods, Janelle Woods, LaRue Taylor, Camille Taylor all of Kansas City, MO. He leaves behind 17 grandchildren: Shanell, Darrell, Shawnee', Brittany, Naomi,Ta-Riyadh, Mariah, Elijah, Isaiah, Aeon, Aiden, Renee, Deyonsha, Terrell, Josiah, Brandon, Anthony Jr., "A.J."; two brothers: Vincent Leigh and Gerald Leigh; two sisters: Angelyn Tyler and Brenda Barnes; and a host of great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services Saturday, October 14, 3:00 p.m. at Swope Parkway United Christian Church. Interment Missouri State Veteran's Cemetery. Visitation 2:00-3:00 p.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
