Obituary

Curtis Levern Thomas, 70, was born November 26, 1948 in Gethsemane, Arkansas to Minnie Williams and Alva Carney. He was preceded in death by his father, Alva Carney; grandmother, Katie Burks; uncles, Johnnie Burks and Rayfael Burks; aunt, Hattie Williams and sisters, Patricia Carney and Edith Hill. In his earlier years, Curtis lived in England, Arkansas with his family where they worked as sharecroppers.

On February 17, 1971, Curtis was drafted into the United States Army. Unable to go to combat, he was stationed in Germany where he worked in Support. Curtis was honorably discharged from the service on February 16, 1975. Upon returning to the United States, he resided briefly in Dover, Delaware before returning to Kansas City. He started a career with the Kansas City Water Department which lasted thirty-nine years. He retired in 2015 as a supervisor of Meter Reader Services.

In 1981, Curtis married Nancy and three daughters were born to this union, Andrea, Tamara and Cristina. On November 28, 2014, Curtis was married to his devoted wife Dorri who was always there to support him during his battle with cancer until his departure.

In the early 80's Curtis became a Seventh Day Adventist and joined Linwood Boulevard SDA Temple where he remained a faithful member until his illness. While there he was ordained as a deacon and was a member of the adult choir, praise team, male chorus and visiting deacons group.

Curtis was a loving husband, father, son, brother, friend and father figure to many. He was a great provider and a hard worker. Curtis had a real passion for singing, cooking and fellowshipping. He enjoyed all kinds of music and loved his family more than anything.

After a six year battle with cancer, Curtis departed this life on July 3, 2019 at K.U. Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas.

He leaves his loving wife, Dorri of the home; three daughters, Andrea Thomas and Cristina Thomas of the city, and Tamara Clarke (Nicholas Sr.) of KCKS; mother and step-father, Minnie and Edward Sampson of the city; three grandchildren, Zoe and Nicholas Jr. of KCKS, and J. Curtis of the city; two uncles, Lee Wesley Burks of the city and Albert Williams of Little Rock, AR; two aunts, Patricia Barber of the city and Louise Thompson of England, AR; special cousin, Debbie Adair (Alonzo) of the city; step-brothers, Lindsay Carney of Chicago, IL and Ernest Harris of Portland, OR; special friends, James & Brenda Byers and Elder James & Brenda White; God-children, Jeremiah Brown, Brenda Johnson and Najah Thompson; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services Sunday, July 14, 12:00 p.m. at Linwood Boulevard S.D.A. Temple. Interment Brooking Cemetery. Visitation 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
