Deryl W.
Barnett
Sep 28, 1955 — Apr 2, 2019
Deryl Wayne Barnett, 63, was born September 28, 1955 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, KS to Odis O. Barnett and Alice Marie Fields. He was the fourth child born into this union, making his twin brother Teryl number five.
At an early age, Deryl gave his life to Christ and joined Pentecostal Church of God in Christ where his saxophone music ministry began. Deryl signed with Savoy Recording Studio releasing his first gospel album in 1975.
Over the course of fifty years Deryl utilized the gift God gave him. He played at several A.M.E. Midwest Conferences and National Baptist Conventions. On Sunday mornings and many evening services you could find Deryl rendering selections to God's people. He was truly faithful in God's service and his soul was anchored in the Lord.
Deryl was educated in the Kansas City Kansas School District and graduated in 1973 from Washington High School, where he played in the Marching and Jazz bands. He attended KCK Community College before being hired at Union Pacific Railroad where he worked for over 25 years. The railroad transferred him from Kansas City, KS to Omaha, Nebraska and California. After 25 years, Deryl returned home to Kansas and continued to serve God through his music. He worked a few part time jobs after his return but the one he most loved was the work he did for Duane Harvey Funeral Directors. It opened new dimensions for his ministry.
Deryl departed this life on April 2, 2019 at the Life Care of Center of Kansas City. Preceding him in death are his mother, Alice Marie Barnett. He is survived by his wife, Jessie Francis Barnett of Kansas City, KS; his father, Odis O. Barnett (Delores) of Overland Park, KS; daughter, Tiffany Barnett of Palmdale, CA; stepson, Michael D. Francis (Larcia) of St Louis, MO; siblings, Brenda J. Glover (James) of Kansas City, KS, Odis O. Barnett, Jr. (Carolyn) of Olathe, KS, Kathy D. Ross of Overland Park, KS, Teryl D.
