Obituary

'A time to be born' Doris Nadine Mathis, 61, was born May 28, 1955. She was the second of eight children born to Shirley Ann Looney. Doris was a mother figure to all of her siblings. She was strong disciplinarian; both stern and loving to all her siblings who will miss her tremendously. She leaves to celebrate her life: three brothers and four sisters, Rayford Mathis, Roselyn Turner, Florence Looney, Floyd E. Looney, Donna Looney, Mark Looney (Tenesia) and Toni Herriford. Doris was named after her maternal grandmother, Doris Nadine Whitmire, with whom she also shared the same feisty temperament. 'When I was a child' Doris received her early education at Wendall Phillips and Longview Elementary Schools before attending Westport High School in Kansas City, Missouri. 'Whosoever believeth' Doris was raised closely with her aunts and uncles. She accepted Christ and grew in stature and wisdom of the Lord at an early age, receiving her Christian training, baptism and experiences at Haven of Rest Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri. She and her youngest daughter (Shontrice) were baptized on the same day. 'Whatever you do, do it with all your heart' Doris a great cook, often hosting family dinners, holiday gatherings and cookouts at her home until her health started to decline. For many years she would cook Sunday dinner for her brothers Mark and Floyd because she felt Sunday was the only day that Mark would have 'good meal'. She loved reading romance novels, mysteries and books written by African American authors, often sharing books with her mother and eldest daughter (Latyona). Doris had a special television dedicated to watching westerns and old black and white movies. You could often find her crying after watching one of her favorite tear-jerker movies. She had a zest for life and music, which she enjoyed listening to the Blues. She and her mother attended concerts featuring blues artists as often as possible. Doris was also an avid traveler and loved vacations. 'Her children rise and call her blessed' Doris worked for 30 years in the professional photography industry editing prints for commercial photographers at Associated Photographers, Custom Color and H&H Photo Labs. As a single parent, her hard work and determination allowed her to assist her two daughters in obtaining degrees Rockhurst University. 'A time die' One glad morning when this life is over, I'll fly away'. On Tuesday, January 17, 2017, the date of her grandmother's 100th birthday, the angel of grace and mercy called Doris home to a life in the everlasting arms of Jesus Christ. She was surrounded by family. 'I will not leave you comfortless' Doris leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Latyona Luster (Edward) and Shontrice Patillo (Michael), She cherished spending time with her seven grandchildren, Joselyn Mathis, Kevon Mebane, Sea-Deitrich Mathis, Kendie Mebane, Taryn Luster, Michael Patillo II and Elaine Luster. To cherish her life is her mother, Shirley Ann Looney and grandmother, Doris 'Nadine' Whitmire. She leaves behind a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends who will miss her. Memorial services will be Saturday, January 21, 11:00 a.m. at Victorious Life Church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
