Obituary

Dorothy R. Lewis 92, of Kansas City, MO. passed away September 18, 2020. Dorothy was born March 16, 1928, in Chattanooga, TN, she was the only child born to Jesse L. Washington and Emma Buchanan-Washington. Dorothy grew up and attended school in Chattanooga, TN.

She was a licensed practical nurse at Chattanooga General Hospital for many years. During her youth she met and married the late Ralph Harris Sr. and had three sons: Ralph Harris Jr., the Late Kenneth M. Harris, and Airman Donald L. Harris. A divorce subsequently occurred, afterwards Dorothy and her sons moved to Kansas City, MO. She traveled to Kansas City by train. While in Kansas City, Dorothy acquired and worked for several employers within her profession, including Brown's Nursing Home, Menorah Medical Center and Trinity Lutheran Medical Center.

Brown's Nursing Home is where Dorothy met her husband Jesse L. Lewis Jr. Jesse recalled that he met Dorothy in the entrance to Brown's Nursing Home and they struck up a conversation about if they were hiring LPN's, and about the sons she was caring for. Afterwards Jesse recommended Dorothy to the Browns for employment. Shortly thereafter Dorothy and Jesse began dating, which continued for four years before getting married, and have been together 63 years. He later adopted her three sons. The pair went on to have two daughters and a son Marilyn Jenise, Angela Denise and Jesse L. III.

Dorothy retired from nursing in 1981. She would later work for an attorney and former Kansas City Councilman Mark Bryant for about 10 years. Dorothy was an avid seamstress, knitter and crocheter. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and loved fishing at the lake with her husband.

Dorothy loved her husband, kids, grandkids, and great grandkids. She also had two wonderful bonus grandkids: Mark and McClain Bryant whom she adored.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Jesse L. Washington (TN) and Emma O. Washington (MO); her son Kenneth M. Harris (MO); great grandson Frank Raney (MO); maternal aunts; Eva Buchanan and Winifred Buchanan (MO); Private First Class Wendell Buchanan and Franklin B. Buchanan (MO).

She leaves behind to cherish her memories her husband Jesse L. Lewis Jr. (Kansas City, MO); her brother and sister in law Julius E. Lewis (Linnie) of Broken Bow, OK; sons Ralph Harris (N. Jean) of St. Joseph, MO; Donald Harris of Kansas City, MO; Jesse L. Lewis III (Stephanie) of Kansas City, MO; and Mark S. Bryant Sr. (Michelle) of Kansas City, MO.; two daughters, Marilyn Lewis Thompson (Lloyd) of Grandview, MO; Angela Lewis-Thompson (Jose') of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, James Boone of St. Joseph, MO; David Lee K. Harris of (California); William Frederick Harris (Donna) of Cebu, Philippines; Marissanne Lewis-Thompson of Kansas City, MO; Evan Lewis _Thompson of Kansas City, MO; Jessica Lewis of Kansas City, MO; LaNita Raney of Dallas, TX: Laura Wheeler (Robert) of Kansas City, MO; Mark S. Bryant Jr. (Shanita) of Kansas City, MO; McClain Bryant Macklin (Joseph) of Kansas City, MO; Vincent Lewis of Kansas City, MO; and Johnathan Brennan of Kansas City, MO. a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, and extended family and friends.

Services will be Wednesday, September 30, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Visitation is from 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. Services will be held at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors Chapel, and Pastor Bill Gorman will be officiating the service. Interment will be at Leavenworth National Cemetery, Leavenworth, KS.
