Eather M.
Scaife
Feb 12, 1922 — Dec 20, 2017
Eather Mae Scaife, 95, KCMO, passed away on Wednesday morning, December 20, 2017 at the home surrounded by her family. She was born February 12, 1922 to the union of Herbert Johnson and Florence Rice in Sawyer, Oklahoma. Both parents preceded her in death along with her sister, Dessie Shields and brother, Rev. Albert L. Johnson, Sr.
Eather received her formal education in the Sawyer, Oklahoma school system. As a young adult she moved to Kansas City, Kansas where she worked various jobs in order to save money to bring her family to Kansas City as well. Eather later met, fell in love with and married Henry J. Scaife who also preceded her in death. Two daughters were born to this union that blossomed fifty-two years.
Eather accepted Christ at an early age. She was a founding member of St. John Missionary Baptist Church. She also found the storefront location where the church now stands. In 1987 she joined Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield, Sr. There she served on the usher board and as president of the Prayer Breakfast Ministry among other ministries within the church.
For many years "Aunt Mae", as she was lovingly called by many, was self-employed as a daycare provider as she loved and nurtured many little ones. She was in a reading mentor program where she taught scores of children how to read. She was also employed by the KCPS under the Headstart Program as a teacher's assistant. She was absolutely adored by all who knew her.
Eather enjoyed shopping, traveling and serving others in her community. On holidays, she prepared meals and fed her sick and elderly neighbors. More importantly, she was known as a prayer warrior who never missed an opportunity to minister to anyone about God and His goodness.
Eather truly loved her family and was passionate about family values. She will most definitely be missed by all whose life she touched.
She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Iona Mitchell-Austin and Shirley Pruitt (Eddie) both of KCMO; a bonus daughter, Myrtis Harris of KCKS; four grandchildren, John, Kevin, Michelle and Kristy; four great grandchildren, Johnice, Mae, Malcolm and Jalon; three great-great grandchildren, Jah'Juan, Jace and Luca; and many other relatives and friends not mentioned nor forgotten.
