Elmer Lee
Overton
Nov 2, 1947 — Feb 22, 2026
Elmer Lee Overton was born on November 2, 1947, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Claude E. Overton and Lucile M. Overton. Raised with strong values and a deep connection to faith and music, Elmer's life was marked by devotion, creativity, and purpose. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson Anthony Gray Jr.
During the 1950s, Elmer spent many of his summer months in Windsor, Missouri, where he became a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church. It was there, while singing in the church choir, that he developed a lifelong love for music. His passion for song would become a defining part of his journey.
In August 1961, Elmer joined the gospel group, The Whitney Tones. The group performed throughout the Kansas City area, sharing their message and musical gifts with the community. On June 10, 1965, he became a member of St. Mark Baptist Church in Kansas City, Missouri, further deepening his spiritual foundation.
In November 1967, Elmer joined the Voices of Faith. What began as a commitment to ministry through music soon expanded into remarkable opportunities. He would go on to perform on stage alongside renowned gospel greats, including The Soul Stirrers and the legendary Rev. Albertina Walker and the Caravans. These experiences reflected both his talent and his dedication to excellence in gospel music.
In 1971, Elmer and his business associate made the decision to pursue a career in rhythm and blues music. That same year, the singing group known as The Committee was formed. Their work led to the release of a 45 record, marking an important milestone in his musical evolution.
In 1974, Elmer wrote and produced an album for a group called Smoke, which achieved moderate success. His ability to move between gospel and secular music demonstrated not only versatility, but vision and courage to expand creatively while remaining grounded in his roots.
Elmer leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted daughter Sherree Lee (Dallas, TX) Granddaughters Brandy Lee (KCMO), and Victoria Lee (Nashville, TN) Grandson Maurice Beasley (KCMO) and one Great Grandchild, Brooke Roblez (KCMO)
Elmer Overton's life was one of music, faith, family and perseverance. Through every season, he remained connected to the communities that shaped him and the music that defined him. His legacy lives on in every note sung, every stage graced, and every life touched by his artistry and spirit.
He will be remembered with honor and gratitude.
