Eunice Mae
Thomas
Sep 27, 1934 — Dec 19, 2022
Eunice Thomas was born on September 27, 1934, to Walter and Rosetta Coppage. She was the youngest child and the only girl. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Walter and Robert Coppage, and her husband, Gene Thomas.
Eunice was raised in a Christian home where faith in God and learning Biblical truths were a part of her daily life. She therefore accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized and filled with the gift of the Holy Ghost. Eunice enjoyed going to church with her family. She became a member of Macedonia Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor John Leslie Brooks. She would say, "I love that they sing those old songs."
The little girl who was a daddy's girl at heart would grow to become young Eunice, with an ambitious mind and unshakeable faith in God. After graduating high school, she left the small town of Chanute to further her studies in college at California's Los Angeles Community College.
Eunice would continue to travel and lived in Oklahoma as well before settling down in Kansas City, Missouri.
When Eunice joined the workforce, she held positions at Hotel Muehlebach, Southwestern Bell and General Electric. Eunice, like her father, had an entrepreneur spirit, savvy business skills, and soon she began to start her own businesses.
The community would know Mrs. Thomas as the candy shop owner of Gino's Sweet Shop, located at 43rd and Indiana where there were few other black owned businesses in the area. She later opened JetFast delivery servicing the needs of business deliveries.
Eunice also had a heart to help people and a desire to make a positive difference in the lives of those around her. This led her to take her knowledge of the Bible and share it with not just her family but neighboring children by hosting weekly Bible studies. And still she knew she was capable of more and began purchasing properties to rent out to low-income families and single mothers.
Eunice was a loving, Godly, family woman whose advice and inspiration was based on the scriptures in the Holy Bible. She was an elegant woman with a delightful laugh, easy smile, and timeless sense of humor. Those who knew and loved her can recall memorable conversations with emphasis on God; Her fondness for ornamental frogs, crocheting, puzzles, and board games; The gourmet dishes with unique recipes that she would prepare; And her singing voice as she played the piano.
Eunice Thomas brought in a ray of sunshine when she walked in the room and always embodied the grace and style of a classy woman.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children; Tylon Ross, Mark Ross, Stephan Thomas, Lorn Thomas and Brant Thomas. Grandchildren; Eric Ross, Tyra Hooks, Latrese McTyer, Salihah Thomas, Terena Thomas, Tershon Thomas, and Keenan Thomas. Great grandchildren; Elijah Smith, Jeremiah Harrison, Joshua Harrison, Zyah Smith, Triniti McTyer, Essynce Ross, Eastynn Ross, Eric Ross Jr., and Rylen Hooks. A host of nieces and nephews, extended family members and friends.
Eunice Thomas is an unforgettable woman who is loved and will be missed until we meet again.
