Obituary

On August 1, 1927, a beautiful baby girl was born to Peter and Blanche (Guinn) Grayson in Tullahassee, Oklahoma. They named her Evelyn Vertilla Grayson. Evelyn was educated in the public schools of Tullahassee, attending Harrison Chapel Elementary School 'Little House on the Prairie'. On May 25, 1945, she graduated from Mark Hanna High School, Charles A. Adams, Principal and the unforgettable D. Council Noble, Superintendent. Evelyn remained in the home for two years helping her parents with the Grayson Farm, but one beautiful spring day Evelyn decided it was time to fly. She shared her desire with her parents and they wished her the best. With their blessing, she boarded a train for Kansas City in 1947. She made her new home with her sister Nettie, brother-in-law Foster and niece Ruth Thompson. In 1948, Evelyn enrolled in a local KCKS business college, where she completed the required courses. Moving forward, she graduated from the Madame C.J. Walker College of Beauty and Culture on September 29, 1961. On May 31, 1981 she received a certified award from Park School of Certified Nurses Aide. Evelyn's work history was impeccable. Her first job was with Shadwill Hat Shop in Brookside around 1950. On June 13, 1954 she was hired by Betty Rose Coats and Suits, where she remained until it's closing in 1980. Her last job was with Sir Knight Formal Wear in KCKS, until she retired. After retirement, Evelyn served as a volunteer for the Folley Theater, receiving several awards including the Order of the Pengeon award. Did she really retire though...no! If you needed her, just call the Avon Lady! Evelyn's work and walk with the our Lord and Savior began at a very early age. In 1956, she joined Eighth Street Baptist Church, KCKS under the leadership of the late Rev. I.H. Henderson. She remained an active member until October 2010 when her health began to fail. On Friday afternoon, June 2, 2017, Evelyn Vertilla closed her eyes into tranquil peace and eternal slumber at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Blanche Grayson; brothers, Robert 'Bobby' Mervin, Sr., Rev. Garland and Peter Grayson; sisters, Geneva Myers, Amanda Johnson, Esterine Johnson, Pauline Peaus, Josephine Lewis, Myrtle Thomas and Nettie Thompson. She leaves to cherish her memory: her niece and caregiver, Ruth Williams; great niece, Desiree R. Williams; sister, Dorothy M. Gurl; nieces, Jackie Rector, Teresa Seals and Veoria Grayson; sisters-in-law, Carrie Grayson and Martha Grayson; a host of nephews, nieces, and unforgettable, loyal friends. Memorial services will be Saturday, June 17, 2:00 p.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
