Grover C.
Carter
Feb 17, 1942 — Jun 13, 2023
Grover C. Carter was born February 17, 1942 in Holly Grove, Arkansas to the late Cleven and Leona Carter. He was the fifth of nine children. He was proceeded in death by his parents, a sister Lurlene Davenport, two brothers James T. Carter Sr. and Bobby Wayne Carter, Sr., three children Deborah Crockett, Valerie Young, and James Carter.
At an early age his family moved to Kansas City where he received his education through the Kansas City School District. Sonny accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age and attended All Saint's Temple under the guidance of Bishop Rodgers. He later joined Rock of Gibralter Church of God in Christ. After a brief absence from the church, he rededicated his life to Christ, joining Malachi Missionary Baptist Church under the guidance of Pastor Donald Tittle, Jr.
Sonny worked briefly at Armco Steel. Later he received his certificate in small engine repair, he also drove dump trucks, following in his big brother's (Booker's) footsteps. Later he worked for the City of Kansas City as a heavy equipment operator until he retired. However, not being able to sit still he purchased a tractor and drove over the road for ten years, as an independent contractor. Sonny once again needing something to do worked as a school crossing guard.
Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cooking/ barbecuing which he thought no one did better than he, watching westerns and spending time with family. He was an avid Chiefs fan, and had a great love for blues and gospel music.
While his outspoken and blunt personality could be mistaken as "mean", he was really a softee at heart. He met and married his soulmate, Monique Griddine and to this union no children were born.
Sonny was a strong and hard working man, one to never sat still, even after being diagnosed with terminal cancer he continued to work everyday, and do the things he enjoyed while still going to weekly Chemo treatments. Once his health start to decline and was no longer driving his wife would take him out twice a week for a ride around town stopping along to see family, then would stop to pick up lunch and head home to sit on deck and enjoy the sunshine. Even at the end he was still recognizing family, smiling and using his favorite word (we all know what that was lol) Over the pass couple months he fought a hard fight but did not suffer.
Sonny passed away peacefully at home with his wife at his side. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife Monique Carter of over 40 years. Six sons; Frederick Giles, Vincent Shelby (Jamesetta), Grover Giles (Queen), Edward Carer, William Craddock, Sr. (Beverly), and Kenneth Craddock, Sr. (Michelle).
