Obituary

Helen M. Luckett, 87, was born to the union of Reverend Booker and Meda Martin on November 1, 1929. She was the fourth of five children. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings; husband, Leroy Luckett; son, Percy L. Martin; granddaughter, Terri Lynn Martin and great grandchild Chevis Martin. Helen was a member of the Sumner High School Class of 1947. Shortly after high school, she went to work for Brand and Puritz Garment Factory in Kansas City, Missouri. Helen accepted a job as a care taker for a family who had a daughter with Cerebral Palsy. She remained in their employment for over fifteen years. Helen began working for the Social Security Administration in 1965, from which she retired after twenty-two years. During her employment there, she was given many awards and certificates for outstanding performances and suggestions. Many of her suggestions are still in use today. Helen married Leroy M. Luckett on July 11, 1971. She was married until his death on February 19, 2011. She was a faithful member of Bethel AME Church for over sixty years, where she held various responsible positions including the Steward Board, Senior Choir, and Kitchen Committee to name a few. She was actively involved in her weekly bible study and Sunday school until her health began to fail. After retirement from the Social Security Administration, she continued her catering business full time. Helen lived a prosperous Christian life. She enjoyed her favorite passion of cooking and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. One daughter survives her, Gwyndolyn L. Hill (Clarence), along with thirteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great grandchildren and twenty great-great grandchildren. Memorial services will be Saturday, January 7, 12:00 p.m. at Bethel A.M.E. Church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
