Obituary

Henry Brass, 77 of Kansas City, Mo passed away, Sunday, September 12, 2021. Henry Brass was born November 20, 1943 to Johnny and Annie Mae Brass in Wisner, Louisiana. Henry attended Wisner Gilbert High School. Henry broke Jim Crow Barriers by becoming the first Black man in the state of Louisiana to earn a private pilot license in 1968 and a commercial pilots license in 1971. Henry utilized his pilot license while working as a cargo pilot at the Monroe, Louisiana airport. In 1969, Henry was bore his first child a daughter named, Monica. During his career as pilot, Henry was drafted in military service for the Vietnam War. Henry was a proud Army veteran. After his service in the military, Henry relocated to Kansas City, Missouri. Henry found a new career as fuel operator with Kansas City Power Light company. Henry retired from the Kansas City Power & Light company after 36 years of service. Henry was a loving and devoted husband to his wife Cloria (Nicey). Henry and Cloria's loving union resulted in three children, Johnny" John Boy" Brass, Allen" Bear" and Ko'Ann (Ko) Brass. Henry's children affectionately nick named him " Iron man" because his of fortitude, tenacity and strong work ethic that he instilled in all four of his children. Henry was a jovial man with a keen sense of humor. Henry was often seen in his "throne room "with a Heineken beer in his hand while he told wise cracks. Henry enjoyed listening to the music of guitar greats of Carlos Santana, Eric Clapton, and Pink Floyd. Outside of his passion for flying airplanes, Henry was avid horticulturist. Henry could make any plant grow, including a lemon and lime tree in the middle of Missouri. Henry was a wise man, who found his spiritual refuge with God out in nature. Henry often said, " Watching the sunrise and hearing the birds chirp was his Sunday Service and he never felt more closer to God than he witnessed the sunrise and all of nature waking up". In the early hours of Sunday September 12, 2021 Henry transitioned peacefully in his sleep shortly before the sunrise and the birds began to chirp. Henry " Iron Man" Brass' love and legacy lives on with his wife Cloria. His children Monica Graham, John Brass, Allen (Jameka) Brass and Ko'Ann (Darrell) Brass. His grandchildren Joubert, Allen Jr, Jaylen, Kohanna, Alayna and Dakotah will fondly remember good times with Paw-Paw at his red house. Henry's surviving brothers and sisters: Mattie, Rebecca, May, Kenneth, Johnnie Ruth, Clemon & Richard will also cherish the memories of their brother. Henry is proceeded in death by his parents , Johnny and Annie Mae Brass. As well as his sister Betty and his brothers Alvin and Issac. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors Chapel. Visitation 10:00 a.m. - 11. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Services provided by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Dir. Facial masks and social distancing is required.
