Jackey 'Tony'
Hancock
Apr 15, 1949 — Jun 11, 2016
Jackey Anthony 'Tony' Hancock, 67, KCMO, passed away on June 11, 2016. He was born April 15, 1949 to the union of Omerzell and Betty (Barbee) Hancock. He was preceded in death by his parents Omerzell Hancock and Betty Hancock White, grandparents Millard and Mattie Barbee and Anthony and Corinthia Hancock. Tony accepted Christ at a young age at St. Stephen Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. John W. Williams. Tony was educated in the Kansas City Missouri public school system, graduating from Paseo High School in 1967. He attended Lincoln University and the School of Visual Arts in New York. Tony was employed by the Kansas City Public Schools where he was a Special Ed. Department Para. He was known as a teacher, nurturer, sage, father figure, disciplinarian and even creative genius. He once said, 'It wasn't until I started drawing the kids in the community that I started to feel good about what I was doing.' When he combined his love of children with his skills, he realized he had found that unique style he had struggled so hard to develop. He used art as a form of therapy to connect with the students. He referred to his students as 'spirited' rather than 'high risk'. Tony saw students in his classrooms in desperate need of nurturing, individualized attention and most importantly boundaries and structure. He believed strongly that children crave both affection and discipline. He strived to create both roots and wings for his students. Over the years Tony was an active member of the community, The Niles Home and Carver Center receiving many awards and recognitions. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship by the University of Kansas at Lawrence African/Caribbean Studies Department to study six weeks in Ghana, Africa; appointed to the Municipal Art Counsel Committee, appointed to the Mayor's Task force on Race Relations; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Youth Service Visual Arts Award; Kansas City Missouri '100 Most Influential African Americans'; Proclamation from the Mayor's office: Achievement Award 'Youth In Crisis'; Humanitarian of the year: K.C. Consensus. Youth Forces Against Racism; and The Dorothy Davis Award. Tony leaves to mourn his passing: four brothers, Leonard Barbee (Lynn), Jimmy Hancock of New York, Michael Hancock (Mae), and Glenn Hancock (Emma); two sisters, Debra Lee (Rudy) and Ruthelle Moss of Las Vegas, NV; surrogate sons, Jesus Negron, Kevin Moore and Anthony Moore; and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, coworkers and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 18, 11:00 at Jamison Memorial Temple C.M.E. Private disposition. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E.
