Obituary

On July 6, 1949 Janice Kay Hankins was born to Josephus and Arnola Henderson in Kansas City, MO (both parents preceded her in death). She was the youngest of three children. At the time Janice departed her earthly vessel, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 27 years- Thornton Howard Hankins, sister - Betty Jo Williams, eldest son-Charles Jeffrey Hamilton Jr and God-sister Sarah Browne.

Janice received her elementary education from Seven Oaks Elementary School and her secondary education at Central High School, graduating in the Class of 1967. Although Janice attended some college courses, her real passion has always been teaching. She accomplished this task through the art of Cosmetology. Janice taught in the Kansas City School District for nearly 30 years as a Cosmetologist Instructor. After retiring in 2012, she remained active with the Board of Cosmetology through the State of Missouri as a Licensed Certified Instructor and State Board Examiner. Her influence with her students and colleagues was admirable. She remained close and in contact with many of them, up until her demise.

Janice received Christ at an early age at Second Baptist Church, being baptized by the Reverend E. E. Chappell. After becoming an adult she joined Deeper Life in Christ Church where she served faithfully, until the passing of her Overseer - Evangelist Ricci Phillips. In recent years, Janice joined Come-up Higher International Ministries where she proudly and faithfully served and taught the young girls and woman of the church. She also was an active member of the Elegant Women of God under the leadership of Pastor Sharon Stephens. Janice loved her pastors and would often say, "Reggie & Sharon are no longer just my cousins, they are my Apostle & Pastor." She became affectionately referred to as "Mother Hankins". Her love had no bounds, as she affected hundreds, if not thousands of young girls and women throughout her adult life. It is believed that she accomplished this by her innate ability to "love with kindness". (Jeremiah 31:3)

Janice was truly a blessed woman. She was afforded the opportunity to travel to many different places, cities and countries. She traveled yearly to Bronner Brothers' Hair Show in Atlanta and always took interested students (both former and existing) with her. She toured Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico, Germany, Paris, London, China, Poland, Drove on the Autobahn, Turkey, The Netherlands, Czechoslovakia and countless other places, foreign and domestic.

She leaves to cherish her memory: 1 sister- Richetta (James) Gilkey, 3 sons - Na'Ron Hamilton, Hakim (Rhonda) Hamilton and Thornton (Natalie) Hankins, all of Kansas City. 2 stepchildren - Tracy Hankins and Tonya Dixon of Houston, TX. 1 Sister-In-Love - Cynthia Simon of Jacksonville, FL. 10 grandchildren (whom affectionately called her Nana) - Charles and David Sollars, Rihana, Devonte and Kahliyse Hamilton, Kaylana Dixon, Amari, Nathan, Kynnedi and Kyren Hankins. 6 nephews - Carlos (Sue) Henderson Sr, Alonzo (Theresa) Wyatt and Asahn Wyatt, Kevin & Terry Browne and Michael Terry. 3 great nieces – Tekenna Jacobs, Sharonda Weathers, Alesea, Autumn and Nialana Wyatt. 4 great nephews - Carlos Henderson Jr, Hanif Blunt, Alonzo Wyatt III, EliYah and Juelyus Wyatt. 1 great-great niece – Shanya Henderson. 2 great-great nephews – Trayvon Lauderdale, Carlos Henderson, and a host of other family and friends.
