Jason
Kersey
Apr 30, 1978 — Apr 5, 2024
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
Revelation 21:4
Jason Brondal Kersey was born on April 30, 1978 to Cleveland Brondal Kersey and Ora Tillman Kersey
in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His earthly life came to a close on Friday evening, April 5, 2024 at Kindred
Hospital Northland, Kansas City, Missouri.
Jason attended Park Hill High School graduating with honors on May 19, 1996. Jason was accepted into a
six-year medical school program.
In July 1996, Jason was successful in auditioning for the Michigan State University Marching Band.
Unfortunately, shortly after the audition, Jason contracted an illness which delayed his admission to
Michigan State University. Jason required rehabilitation services including physical and occupational
therapies for four months. His vision slowly deteriorated. Due to his vision impairment, Jason was not
able to pursue his lifelong dream of being a Pediatrician. However, Jason was able to attend Michigan
State University in January 1997. Jason worked hard, persevered and was able to graduate from Michigan
State University on December 15, 2000 with a Bachelors of Arts degree with a major in
Communications.
After graduating from Michigan State University, Jason participated in the Lions Club low vision
program which allowed him to use assistive technology to assist in career development. In spite of his
vision impairment, Jason found a career with Internal Revenue Service. Jason worked as a Collection
Specialist until he suffered a major stroke in March 2016. He went through several months of
rehabilitation and was eventually able to return home with caregiving assistance. Jason attended the
American Stroke Foundation's Next Step Program, which was aimed at maintaining and improving
health, wellness, and participation for individuals to relearn skills lost after a stroke. Jason participated in
Communication/Speech Therapy, Healthy Behaviors, Life After Stroke, Physical Fitness/Aquatics,
social and fun activities with other stroke survivors. On behalf of Jason, his family created his team,
Jason's Spartans, to raise funds for the American Stroke Foundation's annual Walk 'n Roll event.
Throughout his life, Jason faced many health challenges. He was a fighter and an overcomer. Regardless
of the situation, Jason's personality did not change. He always had a smile on his face which was evident
by his kindness, generosity and love for all.
Jason was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kansas City, Missouri. As a
youth, Jason participated in many church activities. After his stroke, Jason attended church regularly with
his parents. Jason always enjoyed the church services.
Jason's older sister, Patrice Kersey Norman from Creve Coeur, Missouri, passed five days after Jason's
death.
Jason is survived by his parents, Cleveland and Ora Kersey; his sister, Vanessa Kersey; brother-in-law,
Omar Norman; nephew, Malik Norman; niece, Amari Norman; uncles: Rev. James Tillman (Wynoa);
Emanuel Powell (Mia); Lemanuel Kersey (Barbara); Marion Kersey (Elizabeth); Vernon Kersey; Marvin
Kersey; John Edward Kersey; aunts: Georgia Tiessen (James); Rev. Barbara McCollum; Helen Broome;
Olivia Ratliff (Craig); Bertha Hardin; Barbara Ingram (Johnny), and Evelyn Simmons (Bernard). He is
also survived by numerous cousins, friends and his former wife and friend, Dominique Payne.
Jason wore many hats including devoted and loving son, dependable brother, doting uncle, warm hearted
nephew, cheerful cousin, and reliable friend.
Jason maintained a special friendship with his high school classmates and his middle school gifted
teacher, Harriet Bell, until her passing in February 2024. Mrs. Bell visited with Jason regularly,
coordinated his high school friends to visit, played card games with him, brought meals and treats, and
helped Jason laugh and smile while reminiscing about the old times. In addition, Mrs. Bell searched and
found Daisy, Jason's beloved dog, who is a part of the family.
Of all the gifts in life, whether great or small, having Jason in our family was one of the greatest gifts of
all. We will always carry Jason's memory in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers donations should be made to The Americal Stroke Foundation (https://www.stroke.org/).
