Obituary

Joann L. Fellows, a vibrant, faithful, and fiercely loving woman, passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2025 in Kansas City, Missouri, surrounded by her devoted family. She was 86 years old.

Born on May 19, 1938, to the union of John W. Reed, Sr. and Ocie Reed, Joann was raised in Kansas City, where she received her education through the Kansas City Missouri School District. It was here that she built the foundation of a life defined by service, faith, family, and fierce devotion to everything she held dear.

A woman of both strength and style, Joann returned to the school district later in life as a Playground Teacher, where she left a lasting impression on countless children with her watchful eye and loving discipline. She also worked for B & G Maintenance and Sears, always bringing grace, grit, and dependability to every role she took on.

Joann married Melvin Fellows, Sr., and together they were blessed with three beautiful children: Melvin Jr., Lecia, and Selena. Joann's love for her children was unwavering, and she raised them with a proud, nurturing hand that never let go.

Joann was a woman who lived life on her terms. She loved fashion and was rarely seen without her signature style — sharp, elegant, and bold. She adored shopping for clothes, treating herself with the same care and confidence she gave to others. Her favorite meals included her beloved tacos, and her favorite place to be was the comfort of her own home. With a remarkable green thumb, she could bring any plant to life, filling her home with nature's beauty and her own personal touch.

Her faith was the heartbeat of her life. Joann was a faithful and active member of Gethsemane Church of God In Christ, where she served with distinction and dignity as Head Usher. With poise, purpose, and a touch of sass, she welcomed everyone into the house of the Lord. She was respected, unapologetically feisty, and lovingly bossy — traits that made her a legend not only in the church but in the lives of all who knew her. "All the kids of the vineyard will remember Mrs. Fellows," and they will — for her sharp words, kind heart, and unwavering presence.

Joann was preceded in death by her parents, John W. Reed, Sr. and Ocie Reed; her brothers, John W. Reed Jr. and Robert E. Reed; and her sisters, Joyce Reese and Diane Washington.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Melvin Fellows, Jr. of Kansas City, Missouri, Lecia Whitted (Orlando) of Kansas City, Missouri, Selena Johnson (Ronnie) of Kansas City, Missouri, her brothers: Tyrone Reed of Kansas City, Missouri, Ray Reed (Veronica) of Durham, North Carolina, Anthony Reed (Karen) of Kansas City, Missouri, Dion Ratliff of Kansas City, Missouri, Carole R. Reed-Williams (James) of Kansas City, Missouri, Special Niece: Shirrel James, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, and dear friends. Joann L. Fellows lived boldly, loved deeply, and served faithfully. Her presence was powerful, her heart unshakable, and her legacy eternal. She did not play and she was deeply respected for it. May she rest in peace and rise in glory.
