Obituary

John Astor Frye, Jr., 79, of Lee's Summit, departed this life at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, KS on October 15, 2021, after a long and courageous fight. John was born January 14, 1942, in Kansas City, MO; son of John Sr. & Gertrude Frye, though John was primarily raised by his mother, as he lost his father as a young boy. John was a graduate of Lincoln High School in Kansas City. John joined the US Army in 1964 and served two years in Vietnam. John received his BA in Psychology from Park College in 1978. John spent over 30 years working for the Federal Government, retiring from this long career as a Compliance Safety and Health Officer with OSHA. He then started his own business consulting firm, serving as a Safety Director for various other companies. John then worked for the State of Missouri Department of Mental Health, assisting children and adults with special needs. On April 8, 1989, John married Irma Jackson Overton, each of them bringing their 2 sons and 2 daughters with them to this union. John was a very loving and active father and stepfather to all 8 of their kids. He always made sure to make time for each one of them. John studied the Bible with Greg Chancellor, upon which he symbolized his dedication to Jehovah God by water baptism on June 10, 1995. He was a dedicated servant of Jehovah for many years and attended the Raytown Congregation. John enjoyed spending many hours preaching and teaching about Jehovah and His holy name and helping others to know Jehovah and His purpose for mankind. John, at 6' 6", was an accomplished basketball player, playing in both high school and college. He also enjoyed watching basketball and various other sports. John had an incredible level of knowledge of many stats for athletes in multiple sports. John had a great love for music and had an incredibly huge collection of various artists and genres. He enjoyed being outdoors in the nature of God's great creation, spending time camping and taking trips to the beach in California. John also enjoyed playing games with his family. He was never one to shy away from a good family game. Left to honor his memory are his wife of 32 years, Irma; his children, Rafael Frye, Rameka Frye, Reginald Frye, Roshanna Frye (John) Barnes, Jonathan Overton, Jerry (Josephine) Overton, Jeanette Overton (Brian) Evans; his grandchildren, Naya Barnes, John "Trey" Barnes, Paige Overton, Fredrick Overton, Jerry Overton Jr., Gabrielle Evans, and Hudson Evans; his mother-in-law, Elizabeth; and a host of extended family members and friends. A special thank you to the staff at KU Medical Center and the Missouri Veterans Home-Warrensburg for their loving and tender care. A special thank you to our brothers and sisters for all their kindness with numerous text messages, phone calls, cards, flowers, and nourishment. For the last 26 years of his life, he believed and helped others to believe that one day soon, Jehovah God is going to make this earth a paradise and all mankind will be able to live forever: without sickness, sorrow, pain, or death. Millions that have already died will be brought back, yes; resurrected to live forever in paradise on earth. We, as a family, look forward to seeing him back in the resurrection. "Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs (or graves) will hear His (Jesus') voice and come out…to a resurrection." John 5: 28-29 May this be your home, too. The family In Loving Memory of Dad You are at peace, your soul at rest, But that won't stop the tears, As we remember the special times We shared over the years. You taught us so many things And you showed us the way. You helped us overcome hard times To be the people we are today. Though we're no longer children, And you're no longer here, We'll never let go of the memories, We'll always hold them dear.
