Obituary

John Zebedee Powers, Jr., 68, of Lenexa, Kansas, was born December 13, 1948 to John and Corine Powers in Anniston, Alabama. His parents and brother, Anthony Powers, Sr. preceded him in death. John moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1959. After graduating from Paseo High School in 1966, he soon after began his first job with the United States Postal Service. He had a great mind and vast knowledge of the English language. He believed he was as smart as anyone and with the proper tools, he could do anything. As a United States Navy veteran, John's service began in 1967 and included the USS Collett, USS Somers and Vietnam from which he received several medals and ribbons. Upon being honorably discharged in June of 1971, he served in the Naval Reserve until the mid 1970's. John loved attending musical concerts. It was at the Ohio Players concert at Blue Valley Park in 1973 where he met the love of his life, Ms. Freida Reaves. The band was a no show so they decided to go to the movies, and from that first date their lives became intertwined. In his eyes there was no other and as two peas in a pod, John and Freida were married on March 8, 1974. Their union was blessed with one son, Preston John whom they loved dearly. John was a dedicated family man with a big heart and would selflessly do anything for his family. Later in life, John attended Kansas City Vocational Training Center where he participated in a five year apprenticeship through the University of Pennsylvania. From this he earned his degree in Engineering and became a Journeyman Pipe Fitter for the Local Union 314 in 1974. He worked as a foreman, repairman and pipe installer on many MO-KS building projects such as the Ameristar, One KC Place and many others. John departed this life on March 25, 2017 at the home. His belief in God allowed him to see that this journey would open the next door to his forever salvation with the Lord. He leaves to cherish his fondest memories and joys: his wife of forty-three years, Freida Powers; son, Preston John Powers; brother, Eric Powers; uncle, Robert 'Uncle Bob' Powers (Virginia); sisters-in-law, Deborah Reaves and Anita Billings (Cleo); a host of nephews, nieces and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 1, 1:00 p.m. at Greater Revelation. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
