Johnny Lee
Gray
Jun 15, 1955 — Jul 15, 2025
Johnny Lee Gray was born on June 15, 1955, in Lubbock, Texas, to the loving union of Jessie Mae and Oscar Gray Sr. As one of nine siblings, John understood the value of family from an early age. That deep-rooted bond would become the foundation of how he lived his life—for 70 wonderful years.
John received his education through the Lubbock public school system and proudly graduated from Estacado High School. Early in his life, he worked beside his father at Furr's Incorporated, unloading trucks—a job that instilled in him the meaning of hard work and perseverance.
Eventually, John planted new roots in Kansas City, Missouri. It was there that he met his best friend, confidant, and the love of his life, Celia. A kind-hearted educator with a beautiful soul, Celia would become his life partner. Their love was enduring and inspiring. After a lengthy courtship, they were united in marriage on March 14, 2009, in an intimate ceremony at the church just across from their home, surrounded by close family and friends.
John was a man of simple joys and quiet passions. He cherished family time, loved a hearty meal, and could often be found tending to his beloved vehicles. A true car enthusiast, John could talk about his favorite makes and models for hours on end. He also enjoyed classic movies, thrilling wrestling matches, and a good football game on any given weekend.
In Kansas City, John worked in the janitorial field, taking immense pride in doing his job with excellence and dignity. His dedication and strong work ethic left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Mae and Oscar Gray Sr.; his grandparents, Oja Mae Boxter and S.J. Gray; his brother, Oscar Gray Jr.; nephews Ashundrick Gray and Quailon Gray; and his niece, LaTasha Gray.
He leaves to celebrate and cherish his memory:
His loving wife, Celia Gray of Kansas City, MO;
Sons Johnny L. Gray Jr. (Charee) and Jonathan Lance (Avesa);
Daughter LaRhonda Barnett-Gray;
Siblings Rita Gray, Ollie Gray, Lora Gray, Denise Humphrey, Deidra Gandy, Michael Gray, Jerry Gray (Sherry), Clarence Gray, Donald Gray (Gloria), and Cecil Gandy;
Eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren;
In the Kansas City area nieces Aesha Humphrey (Steven), Aaleyeh Humphrey, Keona Taylor (Ryan); Nephews Kelley Taylor, Cameron Trigg, Kelvonte Taylor, Ryan Byers, and Coby Byers
In the Texas area and throughout the US he leaves a host of other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will miss him beyond words.
John will return to his hometown of Lubbock, Texas, for a final celebration of life and to be laid to rest beside his beloved parents.
His kindred spirit, his warm and hearty laugh, his big heart, and his beautiful soul will never be forgotten. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.
Rest well, John.
