Joyce V.
Lewis
Jul 27, 1926 — Apr 7, 2018
Joyce Voncelle Lewis, 91, passed away on April 7, 2018 at St. Luke's Hospice. She was born July 27, 1926 in Columbia, Missouri to the union of James and Mae Anna (Stevenson) Freelon. She was preceded in death by both parents, her husband Edward D. Lewis, Sr., one brother James Freelon, Jr., one sister Francis Nichols, and one son Ronald "Speedy" Lewis (Lillian). Joyce was raised in a Christian home and found Christ at an early age. She served on the usher board and the mother board of St. Paul Baptist Church and Jackson Memorial Free Will Baptist Church, before transferring her membership to the Salvation Army Church in Grandview, Missouri. One of her favorite sayings was, "If the Lord says the same", when making plans. She was a disciplinarian and didn't hesitate to give a well deserved spanking, but had an infectious sense of humor and a quick hug. She had a gift of making each of her children believe that they were her favorite. Joyce was united in marriage to Edward D. Lewis, Sr. in January 1946 to which six children were born. She retired from a long career as a mail handler at the United States Postal Service. She worked the overnight Shift for most of her career which allowed her to fully participate in children's school and extra curricular activities. She finished her career as the night shift manager at Booth Manor Senior Citizen Housing Complex. Joyce enjoyed bowling in several leagues over the years and bowled, in fact, until the age of 85. She was a big sports fan and would often call her children during the game to ask if the saw Steph Curry shooting that ball, or Kareem Hunt running that ball! Joyce loved traveling with her youngest daughter taking several cruises and trips over the years. And when in the kitchen she made the best potato salad and homemade biscuits. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Dwayne Lewis (Helen) and Michael Lewis (Rhonda); three daughters, Patricia Wallace (John-deceased) of Grandview, MO; Rose Lewis of Kansas City, MO and Verlalia Lewis of Crossroads, TX; right grandchildren, Dwight Lewis, Rashonda Brownlee, Kasinda Lewis, Jordan Lewis, Taylor Lewis, Shayla Goldmon, Darryl Banks and Andre Banks; nineteen great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, a host of other relatives in Slater, Mo, Denver, Co, and St. Louis, MO; and friends. Funeral services Tuesday, April 17, 11:00 a.m. at St. James United Methodist Church. Interment Mount Moriah Cemetery. Visitation 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
