As a lifelong area resident, Leonard was educated in the public schools of Kansas City, Missouri. He attended Graceland Elementary and Paseo High School. He was affectionately known as "Junior" and "J.R." by his family and friends.
Leonard accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mount Transfiguration Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Harold O. Reynolds. He was employed as mover for a local moving service. He enjoyed playing chess, card games and dominoes. He considered himself as one of K.C.'s finest chess players.
He leaves to cherish his memory: four sons, Mackale Joyner (Jamila), Leonard Joyner, Jr. (Lisa), Justyce Joyner and Anthony Miner; three daughters, Ayana Lloyd (Franklin), Shelishia Joyner and Essence Joyner; two stepsons, Rodney Thurmond and LaVell Thurmond; father, Leonard Joyner, Jr. (Cathy); mother, Judy O. Joyner and second mom, Saundra Mayhew; two brothers, Derron Joyner and Tony Coleman; four sisters, Angela Joyner, Kyria Joyner, Montria Joyner and Nicole Doxey Joyner; companion, Brenda Miner Joyner; lifelong friends, Janice Shelton, A.O., Joe "Baby Joe" Shelton and Tony Mayhew; eight grandchildren and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services Friday, August 3, 12:00 p.m. at Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Private disposition. Visitation 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.Visits: 0
