Leonard D.
Newson, Jr.
Nov 24, 1933 — Oct 11, 2016
Leonard D. Newson, Jr., 82, KCMO, passed away on October 11, 2016. He was born November 24, 1933 in Kansas City, Kansas to Leonard D. Newson, Sr. and Elizabeth Campbell. His parents and eldest son, Leonard D. Newson III preceded him in death. Leonard graduated from Sumner High School in 1950. He later continued his education to become a computer programmer for Owens and Corning Fiberglass, with twenty-five years of service. Leonard lived and loved life to the fullest, from working with his hands to his favorite pastime of watching sports. He could spend countless hours watching football, baseball, and golf going all the way back to the famous Jack Nicholson through the great years of Tiger Woods. He enjoyed watching tennis with Serena Williams being one of his favorites. Leonard also enjoyed patting his foot to the sounds of blues and jazz, from the Bee Gees, Eagles, and Gladys Knight and the Pips just to name a few. Through his love for music, entertainment and people, he and his wife owned an after joint known as 'The Red Rooster' located in Kansas City, Kansas. Last but not least, Leonard was a great history buff. He loved to share historic facts with anyone who would lend an ear. He was a great teacher of sorts and always held near to his heart his wife of fifty-six years, his children, grandchildren and extended family. He will be sorely missed by many and never forgotten. He is survived by his wife, Hortense T. Newson; children, Darrell, Delano, Deborah, Denise and Kevin; brother, Jerald C. Newson; special family friend, Melvin Marshall; twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, very devoted work family from St. Theresa North Church and a host of friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 22, 11:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Private disposition. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the chapel. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
