Leroy
Robinson
Sep 9, 1927 — Sep 2, 2023
Proverbs 3: 5-6
TRUST IN THE LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
Leroy Robinson was born September 9, 1927, in Shreveport (Bossier City) Louisiana.
His father Simon Robinson and mother Mary Wright adopted him at an early age. He served in the United States Army during 1941-1946, including World War II. He first married Gloria Robinson and together they had 3 children: Larry, Alan, and Tony. In 1959, Leroy moved to Kansas City and married Lillie M. (Hicks) Robinson in 1960. There were 3 children born under their union: Patrick, Marseill and Kathryn. In the later years, was married to Yvette (Singleton) Robinson.
The old adage, "the early bird catches the worm," prompted a young black man to rise early to attend school in Olathe, KS with four of his colleagues. He was a curious fellow, a risk-taker and wanted to be where the action was so he attended Plumbing & Heating School for one year to obtain certifications. In the 1960's it was unheard of to acknowledge a black supervisor. He was asked by his white supervisor to shovel and roll rock using a wheel barrel. After years of laboring, the white supervisor stepped down and worked under him. He studied day and night and passed the test to obtain his license as Master Plumber on the first attempt.
During the 1970's the City of Kansas City, MO had to allow so many minority contractors to bid jobs. Despite obstacles, he out bid many contractors and established contracts under Leroy Robinson Construction Company ranging from $48,000 - $149,000 over a 45-year period. He worked tirelessly to establish his business with the help of his wife Lillie. His business expanded to include 6 employees, serving Raytown, Grandview, KCMO and KCKS. He earned the
name, "Poor Boy'' Robinson working from sun-up to sun-down (in his own words). He received one of the largest contracts with Perkins Restaurants for their first 4 store openings. He was the only black contractor hired to do work for Pittman Industries.
He served faithfully at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church as a Deacon and Trustee. In his leisure time he enjoyed playing dominoes. He placed 1st, 2nd and third in the World Championship Domino Tournament in Andalusia, Alabama. He also enjoyed traveling with his grandchildren on many trips to New York, NY and Denver, Colorado to name a few. He was a man with a generous heart not to just his family but to those who needed a helping hand.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon Robinson and Mary Wright, his wife, Lillie, his daughter, Kathryn, brother, Robert and sister Dorothy.
He is survived by his sons: Larry Robinson (Mary), Alan E. Robinson (Debra), Anthony Robinson, and Patrick Robinson (Beverly) all of Kansas City, Mo. One daughter, Marseill R. Hudson (Isaac), Raytown, his brother, James Robinson, Los Angeles, CA.,11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 2 great- great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends and a special friend and caregiver.
