Lloyd P.
Kemp
Mar 4, 1939 — Mar 6, 2019
Lloyd Paul Kemp, 80, was born March 4, 1939 in El Reno, Oklahoma. He was the oldest and first born to his father, Reverend Phillip Larue Kemp, and his mother Marie (Fanning) Kemp. He was affectionately called "Paul" by all his loved ones. His family moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1947 where Paul attended elementary school and Highland Park High School, in which he graduated with many athletic honors graduating in 1957. That same year he married Kay Meadows and from this union was a son, Dennis Akins. His vibrant personality, commitment to education, and natural athletic abilities brought him to Dodge City Junior college and Kansas State University on football scholarships. In 1963 he married Anita (Vann) Kemp and to this union a son, John Phillip Kemp. He worked very hard and was passionate about being successful in everything he did. Based on his upbringing and the fact that his father was a preacher, from Day 1, he was devoted to his religion and developed a relationship with God early in life. He sang his favorite song, "This Little Light of Mine" every opportunity he had.
In August 1970, Paul married Vernita (Jackson) Kemp. Paul and Vernita lived an enjoyable life together for 48 years until his passing. Numerous trips to El Reno, Spencer, and Oklahoma City, OK to visit their family and friends; Frequent and regular weekends at the races; Regular Sunday dinners together with children; and travels across the nation are just a few things they did together. Thus, he was "King of the Road" according to his wife. They were frequently on the go and loved to humor each other on a daily basis through their devoted love for one another. Paul and Vernita enjoyed being at home with delicious food, and with great conversation and fun especially during the holidays. They attended their church together for many years, and was highly dedicated to their church.
Paul loved hanging with all of his children and grandchildren. Although his children are grown, he always had advice and education to share. He wanted to ensure his family learned survival skills to be successful in their lives. His mantra was "God , Family, and Education", and he shared his three ingredients frequently and with everyone. He believed a true relationship with the Lord, coupled with a healthy family foundation, and solid education attainment could give anyone a chance at living a successful and productive life.
Paul was highly accomplished. He was the first African American Deputy Sheriff in Topeka, Kansas, and the first African American hired by Chemagro-Mobay-Bayer. He finished his Teaching degree at Avila University while working at Bayer and Lincoln High School (KCMO). He served in many roles during his employment with the Kansas City Missouri School District, and was integral to the beginning of the in-school suspension program at Central High School. He went on to teach for more than 20 years at Fairview Alternative School retiring in 2002, and eventually became the President of the Retired Teachers Association. He was generous and caring and left great positive impact on hundreds of students who have fond memories of him from their childhood through adult life. His friendly demeanor and vibrant character brought him faithful and sustainable friendships and bountiful admiration and popularity throughout his life. He was truly a rare gem and awesome blessing!
Paul departed this life on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 just two days after his 80th birthday, and went to his eternal home with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Phyllis Harold and Delores Kemp; son Dennis Atkins and daughter Darryl L. Harris Bradley.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife Vernita O. Kemp; children Robert L. Harris, II (Phyllis), Kimberly Harris, John P. Kemp, and Paulita Moore; siblings Gloria White, Cecilia "Faye" Agee, Juanita Kemp, Michael Kemp, and Cynthia Kemp; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.
