Mr. Lucius D. Price, Sr., 97, was born September 21, 1920 in Memphis, Tennessee, and later moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his Mother Brenda Price, Father Louis Price, two brothers, two sisters and the love of his life, his wife Lelia Price on November 10, 2007.
Mr. Price was a graduate of the Lincoln High class of 1938. He was inducted into the Armed Services during World War II where he served in the China, Burma and India Theaters of War. Upon leaving military service in 1945, Mr. Price was united in marriage to Lelia Davis in the same year. Following his active duty service, Mr. Price joined the all-black National Guard unit located at 18th and Highland and attended various Military schools. He finished his service in the Reserves while being awarded the title of Chief Warrant Officer 4, as well as earning a license as a helicopter pilot.
Mr. Price was employed by the U. S. Postal Service for many years and later became an Administrative Officer for the State of Missouri Civil Service. Following his retirement in 1980, Mr. Price volunteered to publish a newsletter for the 286 residents at the complex where he resided by printing information, along with human interest stories for more than 20 years. He was honored by the residents of the Loma Vista (West) Townhouse community by naming the room in the clubhouse where he assembled the Newsletter as the, "Lucius D. Price" room.
During his retirement, Mr. Price volunteered his service to deliver "Meals on Wheels" to senior citizens in Raytown, Missouri for 7 years. He also served as a member of the Army Reserve Retirement Board for over 20 years.
On their 50th wedding Anniversary in 1995, Lucius and Lelia Price received a letter of commendation from President Bill Clinton. During the celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary, President George W. Bush sent a letter of appreciation. In 2014, Mr. Price was awarded the Veterans Service Award by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon for his volunteer service.
Mr. Price was not only a devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, but was an outstanding citizen who endeared himself to the countless friends he made during his retirement, by sending them birthday and Christmas card greetings each year. He was a faithful member of New Vision Christian Church from the time he was baptized in 2008 until his passing on December 24, 2017. Lucius D. Price leaves behind to mourn his passing: 3 children, Brenda. L. Price-Moore (Chuck), Shirley Jean Price, and Lucius D. (Rick) Price Jr.(Carole); six grandchildren, Michael Moore, Crystal Moore Stambaugh (Mike), Gary Bell, Monique Daniel, Daron Price, and LaToya White; 4 great grandchildren, Emmie Sims, Miles Stambaugh, Maya and Macee Thies; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services Friday, January 5, 11:00 a.m. at New Vision Christian Church. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.Visits: 0
