Obituary

Malachi Brewer (also known as Mal), 76, a loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospital. Mal was born on November 25, 1943 in Kensett, Arkansas, to Monroe and Gertrude (Floyd) Brewer.

Mal spent his early years growing up in Kensett, Ark. In the early 1950s, Mal moved to Omaha, Nebraska where he was raised by his sister Glendora and brother-in-law Keefus Brewer, Sr. He attended Omaha public schools and graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1963.

After high school, Mal moved to Denver, Colorado where he worked in landscaping at the Denver Zoo. He lived and worked in Denver until enlisting in the United States Air Force in July 1966. While stationed in the Air Force, he was stationed in Texas, Missouri, Maine, and New York. Mal served in Vietnam from May 1969 to May 1970.

He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant in December 1970. While stationed at Whiteman's Air Force Base in 1967, Mal met the love of his life Helen Smith. Mal and Helen married on December 23, 1968 in Kansas City, Missouri and had two daughters, Barbette and LaTonya.

For Mal, family was paramount. He had a special relationship with so many of his nieces and nephews. He played an active role in the lives of his four grandsons. His grandsons could be found at his home on the weekends or traveling with him and Helen out of town. He pushed them to excel in school often telling them "study to show thyself approved." Mal also supported any of their endeavors by rooting them on, coaching their sport teams, and attending sports games and awards ceremonies. Along with his siblings, he was instrumental starting annual and later bi-annual family reunions.

After leaving the Air Force, Mal attended Penn Valley Community College. He also worked at Bishop Hogan High School and the downtown Kansas City Airport in the United States Postal Service as a Mechanic. He was a proud member of the American Postal Workers Union. He retired from the postal service in October 2005 after 27 years.

Mal took his faith in God seriously. He was baptized in 1951, at Centennial Missionary Baptist church in Kensett, Arkansas. On April 2, 1988 Mail joined St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church. At St. Therese Little Flower , he was and active member of the Knights of Columbus. He especially enjoyed volunteering at the Lenten Fish Fry's and Sunday breakfasts. He also formerly served as a member of the pastoral council.

If you came to visit Mal, he could normally be found outside. He took impeccable care of his yard, planting flowers, mowing his lawn, and growing a vegetable garden. When he was younger, Mal enjoyed hunting with his brothers when he visited Kensett. He was an avid sports fan and was a proud supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Mal is preceded in death by both parents, Monroe and Gertrude Brewer; five brothers, Alfred Smith, Clyde Smith, Hubert Smith, Earl Brewer, and Ben Brewer; five sisters, Zera (Smith) Baker, Glendora (Smith) Brewer, Wilma (Smith) Clark, Ethel (Smith) Haynes, and Zelma (Brewer) Harris.

To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving wife of nearly 52 years, Helen Brewer; one brother Titus Brewer (Onna) of Searcy, Arkansas; two daughters Barbette Brewer and Latonya Brewer, both of Kansas City, MO.; four grandsons Maurice Brewer (Kimberly), Rafiel Hendren, Kevin Brewer, and Malcolm Brewer; and two great grandchildren Kaiden Williams-Brewer and Kiah Williams-Brewer, all of Kansas City, Missouri. He also leaves to special daughters Cassandra Parnell of Kansas City, and Jessica Castorena of Sacramento, California; three special grandchildren, Victoria Gilmore, Janessa Gilmore, and Isaiah Gilmore, all of Sacramento, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
