Obituary

Malik M. Hatten,48, was born January 30, 1968 to Basil M. Hatten and Fadilah Hatten in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was a life long resident. He was preceded in death by his mother. He received his elementary education at the University of Islam and Clara Muhammad Schools, where his mother was both a teacher and principal. He attended Paseo High School, Lincoln Academy and received his high school diploma in 1985 from East High School. Malik worked for AT&T as a supervisor and valued employee for over fourteen years. After a downsizing at AT&T, Malik decided to follow his entrepreneurial spirit and start his own janitorial service which he operated for years. Later, he decided to attend Barber College and become a licensed barber. He first worked at a barber shop in the Historic 18th and Vine District. Finally, he ended up offering his unique brand of advice and insights while providing tight fades and razor clean hairlines to countless customers at Jazzy Cutz Barber Shop and House of Styles located in South Kansas City. Malik loved music. He sang with the R & B group 'Touche', who recorded and released music in the mid to late 90's. He also sang duets with and background for his cousin Nylia. leaving a great mark on the Kansas City music scene. Malik departed this life on Monday, October 3, 2016 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He leaves to cherish his memory: son, DiJaun 'DJ'; daughters, Nicole, Tyler and Makayla; his father, Basil Hatten; brother, Calvin Hatten; sisters, Angela McMillian, Michelle Scott, Mona Gardenhire and Jamilla Hatten; grandchildren, Aerrionna Brown, Nyvia Brown, Brooklyn Colman, Jocelynn Martin and Sasha Hatten; nephews and nieces, Maurice, Micah, Monaet, Addrine, Michael Jr., Robert Jr., Leander, Alexis and Breanna, Tylisha, Shadae, Doniel, Yolanda, Brianna, Regina and Lashelle; great nephews and nieces, Dominic, Blake, August, Shawanah, Ja'tavia, Donte', and Antwon; a very special lady, his fiance', Ms. Wiletta Hills; a host of other loving relatives and friends too numerous to name. Memorial services were Friday, October 7, 9:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
