Marian Christine Porter, 81, died Friday, March 12, 2021, at the home.
Marian Christine Porter, born September 13, 1939 to the union of James and Etta Pearl Hopkins in Kansas City, KS.
Marian grew up in the Kansas City area where she attended Kansas City Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School.
Marian received Christ and was baptized in 1948, when she was only 9 years old. She was a lifetime member of Friendship Baptist Church, beginning her service to the Lord singing in the youth choir. She continued to serve for 72 years at Friendship Baptist Church in various ministries, including the Women's Missionary Union (WMU), Queen Esther Circle, Wonderful Wednesday Bible Study, Senior Adults Ministry, Joseph Sheepfold, Pastor's Aid, and the Usher Board until her health hindered her.
In her 81 years, Marian lovingly raised two sons, Michael Eugene Hancock and Terrence Milton Hancock. She married Albert Dale Porter in March 1988. They enjoyed 16 happy, fun-filled years together traveling and participating in fraternity events, until his passing in 2004.
Marian started her career in Billing and Accounting at Berg Jewelry before securing a position at Koch Supplies, Inc. in KCMO. Marian was employed for more than 30 years at Koch, followed by 8 years at a local American Family Insurance Agency. She ended her working career as a receptionist at Forest Hills Cemetery before her retirement.
In her later years, she loved her quant senior apartment and enjoyed every and all Tyler Perry movies and stage plays, completing word searches, reading romance novels, watching Lifetime movies and playing games on her tablet and cell phone.
Marian was preceded in death by her grandparents, her mother-Etta Pearl Milton, Aunt Johnnie B. Freeman, Uncle Joseph Miller, nephew Mark Johnson, husband Albert Dale Porter, sister Evelyn Johnson, her eldest son Michael E. Hancock and stepson, Galen Porter.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her son, Deacon Terrence Hancock Sr. (Vickie), 4 grandchildren (Terrence Jr, William, Marian, James), one great-granddaughter (Christinia), seven stepchildren, and a host of step grand and great grandchildren; 2 nieces, Linda, Rita (Dennis), 2 nephews, [Rico (Danielle), Tyrone], a host of great nieces and great nephews many friends, close neighbors and loved ones.
Service will be held on Friday, March 12, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church. No Visitation. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Services provided by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Due to COVID 19 masks are required.
