Mark A.
Thomas
Mar 31, 1961 — Sep 28, 2020
Mark A. Thomas 59, was born March 31, 1961 to Tommy Thomas Sr. and Josephine Cubit-Thomas in Kansas City, Missouri.
Mark was a lifelong area resident and received his formal education in the Kansas City Missouri Public Schools. He was very athletic and played football throughout his high school years, graduating from Westport High School in the class of 1979.
Mark accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at Cannon Missionary Baptist Church at the age of seven. He later became a member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Larry B. Aiken and Pastor Olivia C. Q. Aiken. In his spiritual journey, he was active in the Food Pantry Ministry, Armour Bearer Ministry, Security Ministry, Men Ministries/Men Choir, and Power Feast Ministry where he loved to serve and give back to the community. To his church family, he was known as "Mr. Sweets" because he was often seen passing out jolly rancher candy so that people could start their day with joy and a smile.
In Mark's personal time, he frequently volunteered with Harvester Ministry, a ministry dedicated to feeding the homeless.
Mark gained employment with City of Kansas City and other several jobs in the metropolitan area.
Mark met the love of his life, Charita Joylynn Gray, in 1987. To this union, they had one child, Marshauna Thomas. Throughout the years, they shared a lot of good memories traveling, being active in church, and supporting their four children in whatever compacity that was needed. Charita preceded him in death.
Mark cherished each and every one of his grandchildren. He loved his grandchildren so much and helped his daughter Rhonda give birth to Melvin Johnson Jr. He was often seen at performances both as a supporter and chaperone. He was very protective of them.
He was a big fan of the Kansas City Chiefs. Both Charita and Mark loved to entertain family and friends. To his friends he was known as "Yogi". he often hosted many sports parties. He was a lover of music and dance. On any given day, you'd hear him yelling at the screen, talking loud, hanging out with his two friends, Haywood (Doc) Smith and Vincent Frazier, and cooking for his family. He was known to light the grill up and smoke various meats.
