Obituary

Martha Mary Bohannan was born in Douglasville, Georgia, to John and Tessie Arnold Hindman. Throughout her life, she exemplified hard work, faith, and kindness.

As an adult, Martha worked for many years in housekeeping and antique stores. She made history as the first Black woman to manage a store on The Country Club Plaza. Later, she opened her own thrift store on 31st and Main, where she proudly served the community for many years.

Martha was known for her love of bingo and the many friends she made along the way who were always willing to offer her a ride to a game. She was also an excellent cook, and her family will fondly remember her delicious dressing and sweet potato pies. Above all, she loved the Lord and read her Bible daily, drawing strength and peace from her faith.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents, John and Tessie Arnold Hindman; sisters Mae Liza Endsley (Sam), Ozzie Cook (Eddie), Susie Moreland, Elizabeth Favors, and Catherine Wynn (Sonny); and brothers Roman Hindman (Juanita), Matthew (Hazel), Clyde (Jean), Grady (Florence), and Amos (Lugenia).

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughter Ernestine Pickett (Isaiah); grandchildren Rodney Pickett (Angie), Mark (Conchitta), Michael (LaShawn), and Jennifer Harris (Pastor Kevin Harris); eight great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.

Martha's life was one of love, service, and devotion to family and faith. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
