Mary Alice (Walsh Smith) Pollard, 83, affectionately known as 'Bert', was born July 6, 1933 in Kansas City, Missouri as the only child to Bennie and Ruth Walsh. Both parents preceded her in death. Mary attended Lincoln High School, where she was the lead Master of the Lincoln Majorettes. After graduation, she was united in marriage to John L. Smith who also preceded her in death. Two children were born from this union, the eldest Helena (Stacey Lee) and Bennie L. Walsh who she named after her grandfather. Mary was a hard worker who strived to nurture and take care of her children. While working at a waitress as Waid's Restaurant, she worked at the V.A. Hospital's emergency room and picked up other skills under their employment. She then furthered her endeavors by going back to school to study accounting before going on to work at the Internal Revenue Service until she retired. One of her greatest accomplishment's other than raising her children, was the development of a program used by the IRS for implementation of accounting processes and procedures. Bert was called home on the morning of January 21, 2017. She leaves to cherish her memory: her daughter, Helena Lee (Alfred) and son, Bennie Smith (Deborah Ambrose) of Kansas City, MO; two cherished grandsons, Aren Smith and Chase Kirmse; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, January 28, 11:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the chapel.
