Mattie Sarah Lewis was born on February 8, 1956, and passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at Research Medical Center after a brief illness surrounded by her sister and friends. Mattie was the daughter and youngest sibling of 8 children born to the late presiding elder, Rev. Sanders Howard Lewis, Sr., and Mary Davis Lewis. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings: Sanders Howard Lewis, Jr., Frederick Emerson Lewis, Richard Allen Lewis, Noah Williams Wellington Lewis, Rosanna Annett Lewis, and Helen Ruth Lewis. Mattie attended Wendel Phillips Elementary School, Southeast Junior and Senior High School in Kansas City, Missouri. She also attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. In her career she worked as a Librarian for the Kansas City Public Library, a Social Worker at Jackson County Welfare, a Probation Officer for Jackson County Probation and Parole, and served as a babysitter and nanny for many families. Mattie was a member of Ward Chapel AME Church and a lover of babies and cats. She leaves to mourn her passing a sister: Sandra Elizabeth Lewis Wallace, a sister like cousin: Katherine Elizabeth "Kitty Betty" Harris of New Jersey, a daughter like cousin, Joi Preciphs of London, England, her best friend Roberta Saffold; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
