Mellverene D. Sims, 82, was born in 1936 to the union of Nathaniel and Dorothy Burbanks, in Kansas City, Missouri.
"Mel" was a lifelong resident of Kansas City, Missouri. She attended public schools and graduated from Lincoln/Manual High School in June 1955. She later married her best friend, Robert L. Sims.
Mel united with Pentecostal Church of God in Christ while worshiping on 12th and Vine. She was a faithful member and servant. She was a member of the Golden Girls and gave of herself through the kitchen ministry where she was well known for her all too famous green cake and mashed potatoes stirred with a wooden spoon.
Mel was employed by Rocco which later became Beloved Toy Factory, until its closing. She then became a school bus driver and after driving students to school and back home again for several years she became a bus monitor, always caring and showing her love for children.
Mel enjoyed crocheting and making no-sew blankets for the children in her life. She was known as "Muh" and "Granny" to many.
Mellverene Sims was given her ticket to Glory on Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Truman Medical Center. She was preceded in death by both parents, her husband, three brothers, two sisters, two grandsons and one granddaughter.
Her memory will live on through her children, Steven Sims, Robert Sims, and Barry Sims of Kansas City, MO, Keith Sims of Orlando, FL, Roxanne Sims-Harris of Los Angeles, CA, and Michael Sims of Hopemills, NC; two brothers, two sisters, twenty-eight grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; a special niece who she cherished and loved, Brenda Boyd; a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and a great vast of friends and co-workers.
Funeral services Saturday, October 6, 11:00 a.m. at Pentecostal Church of God in Christ. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.Visits: 0
