Melvin Smith, 80, KCMO, went home to be with the Lord on November 2, 2016, surrounded by family and friends at Research Medical Center. He was born September 6, 1936 in Humphrey, Arkansas to Roberta Smith and Wilson Smith Sr. He was the oldest born to this union. He was preceded in death by mother, Roberta Smith; father, Wilson Smith, Sr.; daughter Paula Roberts; brothers, Wilson Smith, Jr., Lonnie Smith, Willie Smith and Bernie Smith Sr., and one sister, Lottie Smith. Melvin's family moved to Kansas City in 1944. He received his formal school training in the Kansas City School District. He received his religious upbringing at the family church 'Mount Pleasant' that his uncle started and where he accepted Christ at a very young age. Melvin believed in family and began working at the tender age of thirteen. Melvin was a meat cutter by trade and worked at numerous stores in the Kansas City area. Melvin leaves to cherish his memories: his sons, Melvin Smith, Jr., Phillip Smith (Monique), Kenneth Smith (Jada) and Robert Smith; daughters, Rena Smith and Robin Smith; brothers, Charles Smith (Patricia) and Leonard Smith, Sr., Calvin Smith; sisters, Geraldine Baker (William), Betty Smith, Barbara Smith, Lessie Howard, Faye Whitcomb (Oscar), Mary Jones and Ruby Smith; and last but certainly not least his ex-wife and mother of all his children, Bertha Smith-Tindall; thirty-nine grandchildren, fifty-four great grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 12, 11:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Private disposition. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the chapel.
