Obituary

Melvin Woods, son of William "Sweet" Woods, Sr. and Henry Mae (Sherrer) Woods was born December 3, 1949 in Wilmot (Ashley County), Arkansas.

"Mel", as he was affectionately called, grew up in Wilmot, Arkansas. He graduated from Slack Le Grande High School in 1966. Melvin believed in the Baptist faith.

Melvin was united in holy matrimony following high school to Barbara Toney and to this union two lovely daughters were born. Melvin and Barbara relocated to Kansas City, Missouri where he gained employment with the City of Kansas City, Missouri. Barbara later preceded him in death.

Melvin enjoyed cooking traveling and spending quality time with family and friends.

Melvin departed this life on Saturday July 7, 2018 in Kansas City Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, William Woods, Jr. and Bailey Woods; sisters, Barbara Woods Johnson and Carolyn Faye Woods Patterson; and a granddaughter, LaKiayh Woods.

Though who will miss Mel's presence and cherish his memory are two daughters, Sheila Denise Woods and Deirdre Denise Woods both of Las Vegas, NV; mother-in-law, Mrs. Willie Mae Hatton Woods; grandchildren, Brittany Marshall, Vernon Botley, Shiarra Taylor, Diamond Woods and Vershon Woods; great grandchildren, Natalia Quesada Woods, Vernon Botley, Jr., Trimiah Marks, Promise Botley and King B. Woods; brothers, Henry Woods and Walter Woods; sisters, Willie V. Woods Bankston Joyner, Eserlean Woods Vanhook and Alma Rose Woods Jackson; brothers-in-law, J.C. "Pete" Johnson, Acie Vanhook, Samuel Patterson and James Jackson; sisters-in-law, Penny Ann Woods, Charlene Woods and Larnell Woods; caregiver and soulmate, Merry Ruff; a devoted and loving cousin and travel companion, Bobbie Sherrer (Jackie); extended children, David Ruff, Gary Lindsey, Teresa Racey and Vanessa Racey; a host of loving and caring nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services Wednesday, July 18, 11:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Private disposition. Visitation 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the chapel. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
