Obituary

Minister Sherman Lee Williams, Sr., 74, passed away on February 24, 2017 at Carondelet Manor. He was born July 1, 1942 in Malvern, Arkansas to Sir Carl Williams and Florine Nash. He was raised by Walter Lewis and Florine Nash. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Velma Williams; and sister, Edith Standardford. Sherman was educated in the Kansas Public School District, where he attended R.T. Coles and graduated from Manual High School while working to take care of his siblings. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at Midwest Theological Seminary and furthered his education at Faith Bible College in May 2000, earning his Doctorate degree. He then taught at Faith Bible College and ministered under the direction of Pastor L. Henderson Bell at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. Sherman retired from the Kansas City School District, from which he received numerous awards for Service, Attendance, Marksmanship, Safety, Driving, Honor and the Valor Award which was usually given to people for disarming students, He also served his country in the United States Air Force. Sherman, affectionately known as 'Big Boy', was cherished by everyone he met and was known for his wisdom, knowledge, barbeque, and feeding others both spiritually and naturally. He was also known as a provider who shared God's Word, his home and food. He was happily married to the love of his life, Velma Williams in 1971, although they were together for fifty-four years. He leaves to celebrate his homegoing: five sons, Louis Dudley, Robert Dudley, Kevin Walker, Sherman Williams, Jr. (Traci) and Jon Williams (Berniece); daughter, Connie Brown; brother, Sterling Williams; sister-in-law, Genola Hightower; and a host of great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends whom he loved. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 4, 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
