Mosie L.
Chamberlain
Aug 20, 1924 — Mar 20, 2017
Mosie L. Chamberlain, known as 'Mo' or 'Mose' by family and friends, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Hidden Lake Rehabilitation Center in Raytown, MO. He was 92 years and seven months. He was born to the union of Mozella Simmons and Ernest Chamberlain in Duckhill, MS. His mother later married Floyd Brady, and from their union his three siblings were born: Peter, Lula, and Joseph. Mosie was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Peter Brady; sister, Lula Miller; son, Marc Chamberlain; and grandson, Ryan Presswood. Mosie loved the Lord, and as a youth attended Greenwood Church near Duckhill. The church also housed the school he attended where he showed talent playing baseball. A World War II Army veteran, Mosie was stationed in Saipan, an island located in the western Pacific Ocean, for a portion of his tour of duty. He remained in the service for three years from 1943-1946, and afterwards in the reserves for an additional three years. While in the service he was a truck driver and drove a bulldozer overseas. He received an honorable discharge. After the service Mosie moved to San Francisco, CA, where he worked at a job building jeeps. While in San Francisco he saw an advertisement for National Trade School, an automotive repair school in Kansas City, MO. He already was an excellent mechanic, having learned the trade from his uncle. However, because Mosie always strived to be the best at whatever he did, he decided to become certified in the field of automotive repair. In 1950, he came to Kansas City to attend National Trade School. He was a hard-working student who excelled in his class and graduated with honors, obtaining four diplomas in the areas of engine rebuilding, transmission repair, body and fender repair, and automotive technology. Upon graduating from National Trade School, Mosie attempted to obtain a job in his field of study at an automotive repair shop in Kansas City. However, each time he applied at a shop, he was met with discrimination and offered a position in maintenance. Instead of becoming discouraged, Mosie worked various jobs until he started his own business in 1957, Rite Way Auto Service, on the west side of Kansas City. He provided a start for a number of students who graduated from the National Trade School and also trained many young men in automotive repair work, including his sons. Some of his students and employees went on to work for Ford or start their own businesses. While in Kansas City, Mosie met the lovely Marilyn West who he married in 1954. From their union were born ten children, five girls and five boys. He was a kind, friendly person who loved his family and friends. He was always there throughout the years to encourage, support, and teach as well as help them and others. Mosie would say, 'If you want to have friends, you have to show yourself friendly.' He was a friend to all who came in contact with him. Mosie leaves to mourn his wife, Marilyn, of nearly 63 years; five daughters: Karen (Joseph) Presswood, Lawrence, KS, Darlene Chamberlain, Lee's Summit, MO, Marian Woodruff, Kansas City, Sophia Chamberlain, Kansas City, and Bonnye (Dale) Brown, Greenwood, MO; four sons: Darryl Chamberlain, Lee's Summit, Derek (Tomiko) Chamberlain, Kansas City, Brian (Sharon) Chamberlain, Grandview, MO, and Glenn (LaTrina) Chamberlain, Omaha, NE; 27 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Brady; sisters-in-law, Juanita West and Luella West; 27 nephews, 18 nieces, and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 1, 11:00 a.m. at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
