Obituary

A life worth living is a life well lived. That is what Elisha Haynes exemplified as he traveled through this life. Elisha was born to Tom Henry and Addie Haynes in a small rural town in Lincoln County, Arkansas on August 4, 1928. However, Elisha grew up celebrating his birthday on July 4th. Elisha was affectionately called "Albert", a nickname given to him by his younger sister Angeline, whom he nicknamed, "Sally Joe." Even though Albert was older than Sally Joe, she always looked out for and took care of her brother. So much so that she was instrumental in reuniting him with his three daughters in 1998 after over 40 years of separation. As a very energetic young boy, Albert often got himself in trouble for being too mischievous. Angeline often told of the times he promised his mother he would not do something again, but within the same hour, he repeated the same behavior that got him in trouble.

Albert attended elementary school up until fourth grade. He dropped out of school to help support the family by picking cotton. He often said, "I dropped out of school, but I didn't drop out of learning." A man of perseverance and determination, he taught himself to read. He said, "You can teach yourself to do anything once you make up your mind."

When he left Arkansas in the early 1950's Albert made his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where his brothers, Robert and Tommy lived. He remained in Milwaukee until 2017 when he moved to Kansas City to be with his three daughters. Albert never met a stranger. He knew how to navigate within any social setting. He had a great sense of humor and a smooth personality that caused people to be drawn to him. Albert was a man of profound wisdom and insight that did not come from formal education. He enjoyed the horse races and playing dominoes with his long-time friend Kathie "Sweetie" Morehouse.

Albert departed this life on June 4, 2019. He was the ninth of twelve siblings all of whom preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory: three daughters, Ethel Haynes-Judon of Raymore, MO, Adean (Eugene) Griddine of Kansas City, MO and Ruth L. Outlaw of Grandview, MO; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and family members. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
