Naomi M. Shaw
"A Journey of Faith"
Naomi Marie Shaw, 93, a resident of Kansas City, Missouri, and Lifetime Member of the Women's Missionary Society of the AME Church passed away on Friday November 19, 2021, at St. Luke's Hospital.
Naomi Marie Shaw was born on June 19, 1928, in Hugo Oklahoma, the identical twin sister of Maomi Pearley; born to Howard Gibbs and Carrie Bledsoe Gibbs.
Naomi Marie Shaw accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at an early age, beginning her Christian journey, a life of service and faith to all who knew her.
Naomi attended public school in Hugo, Oklahoma graduating from Booker T Washington High School. Following graduation from High School she and her identical twin sister moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she continued her education. In 1953 she graduated from the Heart of America College with a certificate in Secretarial Science.
Naomi was a career Civil Servant working from 1955 until her retirement in 1985. She began her career with the Department of Health Education and Welfare, and she retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
On October 9, 1959, she married the late Reverend John L Shaw, Sr., a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church Northwest Missouri Annual Conference. Their pastoral pilgrimage spans 44 years of service in the Northwest Missouri Conference Fifth Episcopal District.
Naomi became a member of the Women's Missionary Society in 1960. She was a pioneer in the missionary structure, serving and representing the following churches and missionary societies - St. James AME,
Higginsville, MO; St Luke AME, Liberty, MO; Zion AME, Lexington, MO, and in the Kansas City area - St. John AME; Gilbert Memorial AME; Ward Chapel AME. She also served in the Colorado Conference - Tanner Chapel AME, Phoenix, AZ and Campbell Chapel AME, Denver Colorado.
Naomi was the recipient of numerous awards and honors for service rendered in the name of missions as well as recognition for her commitment and outstanding leadership in both the Northwest and Colorado Conferences.
In 1981 she received a Commendation from Mayor Richard L Berkley in appreciation of her many years of mission service to the church and community, in 1984 she was named as one of the 100 most Influential Black Women in Christian Service by the Kansas City Globe.
After the passing of her husband, Reverend Shaw, Naomi returned to Kansas City and joined the St Paul AME Church in Independence, MO; in 2006 she transferred her membership to Bethel AME under Pastor Spencer Barrett and worked with the Kitty E Raynor WMS. In 2010 she was elected president of the Kitty E Raynor WMS and held this position for three (3)
years until her health prevented further involvement.
Naomi was predeceased by one brother, Vann D Perry, sister Elizabeth Johnson, niece Janis Marie Harper, nephew Maurice Harper and great grandnephew Maurice Brown. Naomi leaves to mourn and cherish her memories: Maomi Pearley (twin sister), Henry Pearley (brother-in-law), Myra Harper (niece), Kelly Renee Markham-Stegall(grandniece), Liam Stegall(great grandnephew), Qiana Markham (grandniece), Kevin Brown (grandnephew), Summer Brown (great grandniece), Starlit Brown (great grandniece) and Freedom Brown (great grandnephew) and several grand nieces and nephews great grand nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and fellow missionaries whom she considered to be family.
Our family wants to acknowledge the Moorer Family who Naomi had a special relationship with who will mourn and cherish her memories: Paulette Moorer, Ellen Monique Moorer and Ethan Moorer.
Funeral service will be held Friday, December 10, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., Duane Harvey Funeral Directors Chapel. Visitation 10:00 a.m. - 11. Interment Fairmount Cemetery, Denver, Colo. Services entrusted to Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors.
