Obituary

Nathaniel "Magoo or Jimmy" Eugene Mason, 84, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed on Friday, May 3, 2019, at Research Medical Center in KCMO. Surrounded by a loving family, church family and friends, Magoo or Jimmy courageously and peacefully met the challenge of an extended illness until the Lord called him home. Born on July 15, 1934 to Thomas Mason and Elizabeth Randalls in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the oldest of four siblings. His parents, three siblings and his daughter Barbara Diane Cooper-Clemons all preceded him in death. In 1942 his family relocated to Kansas City, MO and he was educated within the Kansas City Missouri Public School District, he attended Longview Community College and received his Associates of Arts Degree. He accepted Christ at an early age at Gregg Tabernacle A.M.E. and later joined St. Stephen Baptist Church where he was very involved with the Drill Team, Choir and Sunday school. After marrying his wife whom was a member of Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church under the late Dr. A.L. Johnson, Sr; he moved his membership there. Again, he was very involved with his church family and served as a Trustee on the Trustee Board and on the Usher Board. He currently was a member of Greater Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church as a Trustee on the Trustee Board, worked with the Sunday school and as a Usher until his health failed him. Brother Mason was employed at the General Motors Leeds plant as an assembler. While there he became the first black committeeman, Chairman of the UAW Community committee and was appointed to represent UAW Labor on the boards of the United Way. He was elected co-chair, then Chairman of the A-1 Budget Council. He served as the UAW Federal Credit Union Board member, Secretary, and later became the President. He also worked with A. Philip Randolph Institute a black organized labor group. He worked with various groups within the community on civil rights, voter registration and other community concerns. He always had a passion for fairness in the workplace and the community. He retired from General Motors Leeds Plant after 21 years of service. He continued to do community service, working with A. Phillip Randolph Institute and the church. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 52 years, Gracie H. Mason; two sons Kevin L. Alexander of Antioch, CA and James E. Cooper, Jr. (Carolyn) of Rockledge, FL; two daughters Shonda Gee (Roderick) & Vivian Moore both of Kansas City, MO; fifteen grandchildren; forty-eight great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; seven special friends, James White, Bruce Harvey, Phyllis Hoskins, William Bozeman, Chester Ivory, Albert Hill, Robert Randolph, Sr. and a host of nephews, nieces, church family and friends.
