Robert E.
Frierson
Aug 24, 1948 — Sep 30, 2020
On the eve of August 24, 1948, Robert Earl Frierson was the second child that was delivered to Lonnie and Darlene (Woods) Frierson. This cherished event took place at Bell Memorial Hospital, currently known as University of Kansas (KU) Medical Center. As a child Robert, was fondly known as Bob, he participated in cub scouts, little league baseball, an ametuer neighborhood vocal group, children's church choir and junior usher board activities. He was often a leader in sales for childrens' church fundraising activities. Bob always chose older friends, he took pride in being the "big brother", and family boss.
During his schooling years, Bob attended Kansas City Missouri Public Schools and graduated from Paseo High school in 1966. As a young adult, Bob, or "Minnesota Bob" pretended to be the oldest sibling. But, as the years flew by, he was pretty eager to confess that his sister was older, and as a consequence, he occasionally learned to step down a notch. Bob was truly a "Giver" with a kind heart. Sometimes he growled like a fierce lion, but deep down inside that roar often subsided to no more than a purr. Those who knew him accepted him for who he was. As a son and brother he was most attentive, generous, and a tiny bit spoiled. He was a great source of wisdom to his younger brothers.
With examples shared by Darryl: Some of the things I remember about my Big Bro was his wisdom, humor and patience. He once told me just because you are born a male does not mean you are a man. If you don't shape yourself, the world will shape you into something you may not like. Never think you need validation from anyone to know your worth. Instead, make sure you validate yourself and then no matter what others say they won't be able to break you. Love you Big Bro.
Cardell: I miss my brother. My Brother was a serious man, but loved to laugh. Bob has always been a visionary, he viewed life with all Green lights and no Reds. He was direct and to the point. To a fault, he had no problem speaking his mind and "giving you some game " whether you needed it or not. Bob knew from a kid just the life he wanted and where he wanted to go. Bob did it his way, period.
To his sister he was a cherished little brother and a tagalog for many years. To his children he was superman. He could do anything and everything in our eyes. He was also a good source of truth and candid honesty for us. And with that truthfulness and honesty, he had a story to go along with it each and every time. And to his grandchildren he was the best Paw Paw ever! Bob was gifted with charisma and met no strangers. He spent his adult life as a self-employed jewelry and clothing salesman. He loved people, traveling, and the finer things in life. His army duty offered him more mileage than he expected.
During the Vietnam War, he served in an army hospital in Bangkok, Thailand.
Bob lived a full life. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents, his parents Lonnie Frierson and Darlene Dale, step-father Clifford Dale, and brother Ronald Frierson Sr.
Bob leaves to cherish his memory with his son, Andre Burks; daughter, Morgan Duffel; 3 grandchildren - De'Mandre Frierson-Holly, Mikhale Duffel, and Moriah Duffel; sister Patricia Frierson; 3 brothers - Lonnie Frierson Jr., Cardell Frierson (Rochelle), and Darryl Smith (Star); Nephews - Ronald Jr., Darrell Jr., Jamal, Jordan, and Zachary; Nieces - Monica, Lora, Kim, Sherry, Jamie, and Ashley; Aunts - Lois (Harold) Woods and Katie (Hebert) Woods; Sister in-laws - Jo Ann and Rosalyn; Special children - Freddie Eskridge, Rasheeda Eskridge, Akilah Harrold-Eskridge, Anthony Burks, Tammy Bale (Burks), Terry Burks, Aaron Burks, Key, Mariah, and Daquan. And a host of relatives and friends.
