Rolland Edward Smith "Rollie" passed away unexpectedly on September 17th, 2024, doing what he loved—riding his motorcycle.
He cherished his family deeply and his joy was evident whenever he saw his grandkids and his newest great-
grandchildren; his face lighting up with happiness in those moments.
He was retired and living in Hugo, MN, with his wife Angela, who passed away in November 2023.
Military Service:
Rollie began his distinguished military career in 1976 when he enlisted in the United States Army. He
completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, followed by Advanced Individual Training (AIT) as a
91B10 Combat Medic at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.
His first assignment was with the 9th Medical Battalion, 9th Infantry Division, stationed at Fort Lewis,
Washington. In 1979, Rollie was deployed to Aschaffenburg, Germany, where he served as a combat medic
with the 4/64th Armor Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division. He remained there until 1981, during the height of the
Cold War.
Upon returning to the U.S., Rollie was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he served until his honorable
discharge in 1982. Following his active duty, Rollie returned home to Minnesota and continued his service by
enlisting in the Army National Guard with HHC 34th Infantry Division in St. Paul, Minnesota, until his second
honorable discharge in 1991.
In his post-military years, Rollie continued to lead a life of purpose, recovery, and devotion.
He is survived by:

Grandchildren | Nathaniel (Megan), Naomi (Roberto), Morgan, Kyle, Christopher, Damon, and Alexander
Greatgrandchildren | Mateo, Celi, and Juni
Siblings | Durwood (Sherry), Raun (Bill), Nathan (Laura), and Goodrich
Many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Proceeded in death by:
Noah Smith (Son), Marilyn Smith (mother), Raymond Smith (father), and Angela Smith (wife).
