Roy G. Johnson, Sr., 82, was born on April 22, 1936 to Lillian Benton and Mose Douglass Johnson in Roland, Oklahoma. Roy was the first born son of four children. On Tuesday, May 1st 2018 Roy passed away peacefully with his beloved children at his side. He was preceded in death by his wife Ophelia; father Mose Johnson, and two brothers Harry Reynolds (Reynaldo Rey) and Glen Reynolds.
Roy attended Dunbar Elementary, Northeast Junior High and in 1956, graduated from Sumner High School in Kansas City, Kansas. He also studied for a brief period at Emporia State College. Roy was a hardworking man who took pride in every assignment he held. Roy worked at Kansas City Power & Light for over 30 years, retiring in 1999 as a Foreman.
Roy was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan. He loved the Chiefs so much that his house is actually painted in the Chiefs colors red and gold. He would travel across country to see his favorite hometown team play. Roy also enjoyed watching the Chiefs and Royals play on tv, fishing, darts, horseshoes and spending time with family.
Roy grew up in church and accepted Christ at an early age. He was a member of Southside First Missionary Baptist Church for over 40 years where he served as a member of Sunday school, Christian education ministry, and most recently Chairman of the Deacon Board. Roy loved singing! He was also a member of the Men's Chorus and general choir.
Roy married his first wife Ophelia Smith in 1957. To this union three sons were born, Roy Jr., Kermit, and Trenton. He loved being a father to these young men. In 1971 Ophelia and Roy were excited to welcome their newborn girl Joi into their family. After Ophelia's passing, in 1975 Roy met and married Brenda Lenoir. Through this marriage Roy gained another wonderful son, Kenneth.
Roy leaves to cherish his memory: four sons, Roy Johnson, Jr., Kermit Johnson, Trenton Johnson, Kenneth Johnson and his favorite daughter, Joi Johnson; his mother Lillian Murray; brother Thurman Reynolds; grandchildren, Durrell, Jessica, Erika, Taylor, Avery, Kirk, Darius, and Tameah; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, in-laws, friends and his beloved church family.
Funeral services Saturday, May 12, 11:00 a.m. at Southside First Baptist Church. Interment Blue Ridge Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.Visits: 0
