Sena Lee Watkins Brewer was born on December 3, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois, the first of three children born to the late Joshua "Doc" Watkins, a dental technician, and his wife, Alfreda Mitchell Watkins, a homemaker. Sena completed her early education in the Chicago Public Schools, graduating from Esmond Elementary School in June, 1961, and Morgan Park High School in January, 1965, right after her seventeenth birthday. Sena was always an excellent student, excelling in English, Reading, and Foreign Languages. She also served as her grade school's piano accompanist for several years.
Sena continued her education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, majoring in General Studies. Here she was initiated into Delta Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. on February 25, 1966. Sena spent a year at the University of Illinois, Champaign, Illinois, where she made the Dean's List. Sena earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from the University of South Carolina in 1969, where she had moved after marrying her college sweetheart, Gerald, who was a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. She completed her Master of Arts Degree at the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth, Kansas in May, 1966.
Sena was a semi-retired educator and social services manager. She taught high school and junior high school English and was a Parent Center Manager for the Parents as Teachers Program. She spent the majority of her career in social services , always enjoying working with the elderly, poor, disabled and disadvantaged.
She was promoted to case manager for the physically and developmentally disabled at Johnson County Developmental Supports, where she worked for nearly twenty years until her retirement in December 2009. She then became a teacher for the Another Day, Inc. and LINC Progrms. She also was a supervisor for the Kansas LIEAP program. Wanting to remain an active, participating member of society as long as she could, Sena continued to devote to breaking the cycle of poverty through hope, resources, and a plan. In this capacity, Sena enjoyed suiting women in the Dress for Success Program who was ready to go on job interviews and empower them to achieve economic independence.
Sena was initiated into the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Delta Beta Chapter, on February 25, 1966 at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois in 2016 she celebrated becoming a 50 year "Golden" Member of the sorority. She was a charter member and the first president of Upsilon Rho Omega Chapter in Overland Park, Kansas. In addition, she served on the Safehome, Tutorial Reading, Audit, Archives, and Budget Committee. Sena became a member of Beta Omega Chapter, Kansas City, Missouri in 2006, where she served on the Connection, Global Poverty, Debutante Ball, Archives, Founder's Day, Anniversary, and Audit Committees. She served for several years as Chairman of the Standards and Nominating Committees. She was a Life Member and was honored to serve as a delegate at several regional and national conventions.
Sena was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Kansas City, Missouri since 1977, where she has served in many capacities, most recently on the Steward Board, Health Commission, PME Director of the Kitty E. Raynor Women's Missionary Society, and Sunday School teacher. She was a member of the NAACP.
Sena is survived by twins, Gerald Brewer, Jr. (Heather) and Stephen Brewer (Holly). grandsons, Gerald Brewer III and Braden Brewer, sister, Marguerite Adams, brother, Joshua Watkins Jr.; niece, Genesis, nephew, Joshua III; cousins, Donald and Frances Brown, sister-in-law, Jeanette Brewer; nephew, Jason Brewer (Chris) and daughter Alyce, special friend of 70 years, Paulette Hatchett Russell, and many friends and sorority sisters throughout the country. To God Be the Glory!
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Private disposition. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc- Beta Omega Chapter Scholarship Fund in Memory of Sena Lee Brewer.
